Video: MINI E Drivers Delighted with Electric Vehicle Experience

UCDavis study shows participants enjoy driving MINI E. Feedback sets stage for next phase of BMW Group Mega-City Vehicle initiative
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - January 26, 2010 12:55pm EST... The BMW Group today announced at the Washington Auto Show the first results from a comprehensive study conducted in cooperation with the University of California (UC Davis) and consumers leasing MINI E electic vehicles as part of a year-long program to acquire real world use patterns. The MINI E program is the first large population field test of current generation electric vehicles and therefore sheds a realistic light on both the opportunities and challenges from this innovative new form of mobility.

    All-Electric Mini E

The UC Davis study results of 57 drivers, combined with updates continually provided from the log books of all 450 users show the following:
    • The range of about 100 miles is sufficient for most daily needs
    • Charging at home provides enough energy for most daily driving
    • Demand for additional charging is centered on the place of work, or where sufficient time is spent during the day (shopping centers, stadiums, etc.)
    • Driving the MINI E is a delightful experience and there is no sacrifice of "real car" values
    • Unmet demands focus on having enough space for four passengers and more cargo to stimulate even more use of an electric vehicle

    All-Electric Mini E

"There's been a lot of conjecture about electric vehicle user demands and being the first to the market with obtaining ‘real world use' patterns, we're now able to shed some accurate light on this subject," said Rich Steinberg, Manager - EV Operations and Strategy for BMW of North America. "What they shared with us is that, for the most part, the MINI E suits their daily driving needs and that they really enjoy driving it. This makes us optimistic that electric vehicles have a role in the future of mobility in America by being a part of the overall vehicle mix."

    All Electric Mini E

More than 1,800 people and organizations applied to be part of this ground-breaking field trial of 450 MINI Es now on the road in the US. From that, 450 were selected based on specific criteria that included the amount and type of use in which they would engage, home suitability to installation of a fast charging system and desire to be engaged in a field trial that requires continual feedback.

    All-Electric Mini E

MINI E drivers provide ongoing feedback that has already proven invaluable to the development work being done by the BMW Group's Project i on what is called a Mega-City Vehicle - the company's innovative program to develop a volume transportation solution to the demands of the world's biggest cities in the 21st century. This vehicle is scheduled to be introduced just before the mid-point of this decade.

    All-Electric Mini E

The self-selected group of 57 that agreed to participate in the UC Davis survey is part of a more extensive research project. Feedback from this program shows that the range of the MINI E enables drivers to use it for most daily driving needs. Reported range under normal circumstances varies between 70 - 100 miles with 45 percent reporting a typical range of 100 miles. MINI E drivers reported an average trip length of approximately 30 miles. Other studies have found that driver's in the US average about 40 miles per day1. This makes the range of the MINI E suitable for most daily driving needs.

    All Electric Mini E

Many households in the study have replaced the primary vehicle of one driver with the MINI E. One-third of the participants have reported driving the MINI E even more than the household vehicle it replaced. The lack of a back seat and a usable trunk, rather than range, is most often the reason the MINI E is not chosen for a particular outing.
Drivers have also reported that driving the MINI E is fun. Most adapted quickly to the characteristics of the Brake Energy Regeneration function and like the feeling of control it gives them in being able to proactively extend the range of their MINI E by how they drive. Brake Energy Regeneration captures energy ordinarily lost on deceleration and coverts it into electrical energy to recharge the batteries. All drivers in the US study said they enjoy using one pedal to accelerate and decelerate. Many reported that once they became acustomed to the BER function, they enjoyed driving their conventional vehicles less.

    All-Electric Mini E

The study found that keeping the MINI E charged did not pose a problem. Recharging in the US requires four - five hours and, while it wasn't always necessary based on their driving needs, about half of the drivers in the study report recharging daily as a matter of routine. Additional recharging away from their home charging station by-and-large proved unnecessary.

    All-Electric Mini E

This first field-trial has provided Project i with invaluable insight as it prepares for its second field trial with the BMW ActiveE. The electric drivetrain developed for the BMW ActiveE will be used in the BMW Group's first Mega-City Vehicle. The newly developed and more compact lithium-ion battery pack in the BMW ActiveE vehicle features liquid heating and cooling in order to provide a more consistent and predicatable driving range. Smartphone apps will enable the user to remotely check the available range of the BMW ActiveE's battery. The apps will also enable the driver to begin heating or cooling the interior of the BMW ActiveE and thus the battery while still connected to the grid. This will allow the battery to function at its optimal operating temperature without affecting the range of the car.

    All-Electric Mini E

The field trial for the BMW ActiveE will begin in 2011. As announced at the North American International Auto Show earlier this month, lease extensions will be offered to a number of MINI E drivers who wish to continue their electric driving experience until the BMW ActiveE becomes available.until the BMW ActiveE becomes available.

Leaked: MINI Countryman Official Photos

Here is your new Mini Countryman, the latest model from the ever expanding Mini range. As you can see, the Countryman (also sometimes called the Mini Crossover) is a bit bigger than other Minis, and sports four doors – five if you count the hatch. You'll also note the "All4" badge on the back, indicating that the Countryman is AWD, a first for the brand.

Seen in the photos is the Cooper S version of the Countryman. Emblazoned with the "All4" all-wheel-drive badge, the car does not appear to be as tall as the MINI Beachcomber concept shown in Detroit. As expected, it does have the same headlights, with foglamps in a similar position. The Pepper White vehicle with a black roof shows off an all-new grille and front bumper, as well as previously-unseen blacked-out wheels. The car maintains three windows on each side of the vehicle, like the Crossover concept. However, the taillamps and hatchback shape are more akin to the Cooper. Dual exhaust pipes are still on either side of the vehicle, but are no longer completely surrounded by the bumper.

Inside, the car has a very similar design to the rest of the MINI lineup. The oversized speedo is mounted flush in the middle of the dash. A panel of six toggle switches is a bit below that, with another row of switches mounted at the rear mirror. The car's white headliner contrasts against the black seats nicely, but we could have done without the teal door inserts.

The MINI R60 will hit the market by the end of the year at €25,000, adding roughly €4,000 for the Cooper S version of the unit. Despite the official reveal taking place in Geneva at March.

MINI Revamps Entire UK Model Range - Announces MINI One Convertible

    2010 MINI SPRINGS ETERNAL

    * New petrol engines with more power and efficiency
    * The One show: MINI One Convertible takes a bow
    * MINI Rainbow colours raise personalisation to a higher plane
    * MINI Graphite model range extended to include MINI Clubman

MINI models are to benefit from a wide of technical advances and personalisation options with effect from spring 2010. At the top of the list are a new range of petrol engines that offer more power and torque while reducing both emissions and fuel consumption. In addition, a new MINI One Convertible will bring the thrill of open air MINI driving to a wider audience. MINI is also raising the customisation possibilities by offering a range of unique Rainbow colour options and an extension to the MINI Graphite Special Edition model range to include Clubman models..

"Hot on the heels of the launch of customer field trials for the electric MINI E, MINI is introducing this array of new technology and features for the new decade," said Jochen Goller, Director of MINI UK. "Once again, our dedication to continuous improvement will bring substantial benefits in both efficiency and performance to our customers."

"Better still, there will be no price increase when the new models go on sale in March 2010"

    New petrol engines

A new and improved version of the MINI petrol engine will be fitted to all First, One, Cooper and Cooper S models in the Hatch, Convertible and Clubman ranges. The MINI First and One models will now be fitted with a 1.6 litre engine, replacing the 1.4, and VALVETRONIC valve operation that delivers more torque and better fuel consumption. All MINI petrol-engined models will conform to European EU5 emissions standards or ULEV 11 in the USA.

VALVETRONIC variable valve timing delivers a five per cent improvement on its own while an on- demand, map-controlled oil pump achieves a further 2.5 per cent fuel saving. An improved, low friction engine vacuum pump accounts for another one per cent and a map-regulated water pump working on a pulsed cycle (rather than simply on or off) saves 1.2 per cent fuel.

Reduced friction from polished camshaft and main bearings, improved heat management and the specific features above combine to contribute more efficient use of energy by the new MINI range.

The fuel consumption improvements have been made despite the fact that the testing procedures under EU5 reduce certified gains.

    MINI First

The entry level MINI, MINI First, receives a new version of the 1.6 litre four cylinder engine that produces 75 hp, the same as its predecessor. The extra capacity has been designed to produce more torque which is higher by almost 17 per cent at 140 Nm. As a result fuel consumption in the EU cycle is 52.3mpg and CO² emissions 127 g/km. Top speed of MINI First is 109 mph while the 0-62 mph acceleration takes 13.2 seconds.

    MINI One

The new engine enables MINI One to increase both power (by three per cent to 98hp) and torque (by nine per cent to 153 Nm at 3,000 rpm). The efficiencies achieved through this new technology also deliver consumption of 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle while emissions fall to127g/km. On the road the true spirit of MINI is revealed with top speed rising to 116mph and zero to 62 mph acceleration taking just 10.5 seconds, a 0.4 second improvement.

The MINI One Clubman benefits from the same powertrain improvements and offers 0-62 mph in 11.1seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. EU cycle fuel consumption falls to 51.4 mpg (combined cycle) and emissions to just 129 g/km.

    MINI One Convertible

Since its launch in 2009 the enduring appeal of the MINI Convertible has been proven by strong demand. So far it has only been possible to buy a Cooper, Cooper S or John Cooper Works Convertible, so the introduction of a One Convertible provides a much lower entry point for keen fresh air fans.

The MINI One Convertible shares the new 1.6 litre VALVETRONIC engine of its Hatch and Clubman cousins, and produces the same 98hp and 153 Nm of torque all for a sub-£15,000 price tag. The new model accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 112mph. Despite this it brings fuel efficiency and CO² emissions to a new level in the convertible market, recording 49.6 mpg (combined cycle) and 133 g/km respectively.

The open top four-seater features a fabric roof that opens and closes electro-hydraulically at the touch of a button up to 20 mph. Designed as a Convertible from the outset, MINI Convertible offers a torsionally-stiff body that allows it to capitalise on cutting edge chassis technology to release that special MINI go-kart feeling. Naturally the MINI One Convertible has a high standard equipment list including air-conditioning and is equipped with all the sophisticated active safety features of the Cooper and S including EPS electromechanical steering, DSC stability control, four airbags and the rear rollover bar behind the rear seats that pops up automatically in the event of a rollover incident.

MINI One Convertible can, like all MINIs, be specified with a wide range of options to personalise it to an owner's taste. These include a wide range of exterior paint colours, interior design choices, hood colours and the ‘Openometer'. This MINI Convertible-specific option records the amount of time spent with the roof down. It is, after all, the principal purpose of owning a soft-top MINI

The on-the-road price for MINI One Convertible is £14,995.

    MINI Cooper S

The iconic Cooper S model also gets more ‘poke' with less ‘smoke'. It is equipped for the first time with a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct petrol injection and fully variable valve control. The variable valve control is based on BMW's familiar VALVETRONIC system that adjusts valve lift and opening times in direct relationship to the driver's command on the throttle pedal.

The result is the most efficient hot hatch in its class: the 1.6 litre unit produces 9hp more peak power at 184 hp while peak torque is 240Nm, delivered from as low as 1,600rpm through to 5,000rpm. This flexibility is enhanced by an Overboost function that delivers 260 Nm for short periods when it is most needed, for example when overtaking. The Cooper S Hatch sprints from 0 to 62 mph in exactly 7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 142 mph, But it's not just about ‘go'. It delivers improved EU cycle fuel consumption of 48.7 mpg (combined cycle) lower by 3.1 mpg, while CO² emissions are now 13 g/km lower at 136 g/km.

The equivalent values for MINI Cooper S Clubman and Convertible are:

    Clubman

    Top speed: 142 mph

    0 -62 mph: 7.5 seconds

Fuel consumption (combined cycle): 47.9 mpg

    CO² emissions: 137 g/km

    Convertible

    Top speed:141 mph

    0 -62 mph: 7.3 seconds

Fuel consumption (combined cycle): 47.1 mpg

    CO² emissions: 139 g/km

All three models are equipped as standard with a six speed manual gearbox or, optionally, a six speed automatic gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Manual Cooper S models will be fitted with a new self-adjusting clutch with carbon coated linings that reduces service costs and maintains consistent pedal feel but also improves gear synchronisation.

    MINI Cooper

At the heart of the MINI range the largest-selling model, the MINI Cooper, also benefits from the new engine enhancements. A power hike to 122hp (+3hp) and peak torque of 160 Nm @ 4,250 rpm help the Hatch to 62 mph in 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 127 mph. Sharing all the new engine features of the Cooper S except the turbocharger, the Cooper achieves 52.3 mpg (combined cycle) and emits only 127 g/km of CO².

The MINI Cooper Clubman and Convertible values are:

    Clubman

    Top speed: 126 mph

    0 -62 mph: 9.8 seconds

Fuel consumption (combined cycle): 51.4 mpg

    CO² emissions: 129 g/km

    Convertible

    Top speed: 124 mph

    0 -62 mph: 9.8 seconds

Fuel consumption (combined cycle): 49.6 mpg

    CO² emissions: 133 g/km

More beef but it won't cost a bean

Not only will customers feel these improvements in their pockets through lower fuel and taxation charges, they will sense them through the accelerator pedal too...but MINI will ask no price increase for the enhanced MINI models - not a sausage!

    More lead in your pencil

Launched in April 2009 the MINI Hatch Graphite Special Edition model has proven to be a huge hit with MINI fans. Resplendent in its special Dark Silver metallic livery and offering unique alloy wheels, white indicator lenses, piano black interior trim, bonnet stripes and special ‘Graphite' badging as standard equipment, this special edition stands out from the crowd. It also stands out in the used car market offering the highest residual value position of any current MINI model.

In February 2010 this hugely successful model will be joined by its larger and more practical counterpart, the MINI Clubman Graphite Special Edition model. Available on MINI One, Cooper and Cooper D variants, the MINI Clubman Graphite offers the same Dark Silver paintwork (normally only available for Cooper S models) and the same enhanced level of standard equipment as on the Hatch. The raised level of standard specification is priced at a discount of 25% versus the normal ‘single' option costs so, as is often the case, MINI owners can have their cake and eat it.

A new level of exclusivity for MINI / Somewhere over the rainbow

From April 2010 MINI will introduce a new level of customisation and expression for those who want to take personalisation to a new level. Three new Rainbow paint options will offer a deeper dimension of reflective quality than ever before seen on a MINI. A water-based basecoat colour produces an amazing rainbow effect in bright sunlight that changes the character of the MINI completely. Available in three different colours - Sunlight Metallic, Asteroid Metallic and Nightlife Metallic - these unique paint finishes open a new chapter in MINI personalisation.

Prices will be announced in March but, rest assured, it won't cost the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

"These Spring changes, available in March 2010, will enhance MINI's attractiveness as we start this new decade," said Goller, "but it is only just the start. There are many exciting things happening at MINI during 2010 and there is much more fun on the way" he concluded.

Video: MINI Beachcomber Concept Unveiled in Detroit

-MINI unveiled the open-air MINI Beachcomber Concept in Detroit. The SAV is a hint at the design of the upcoming MINI Crossover, which will likely debut in production form at Geneva.

Speaking on behalf of the brand, BMW board member Ian Robertson said, "The inspiration for the MINI Beachcomber Concept is clearly born from the MINI Crossover, combined with the vision of a radically open body concept." He went on to audaciously compare the concept to the classic Mini Moke, though the two vehicles have nothing in common beyond a lack of doors.

After all, the Moke measured in at 3,050 mm, while the Beachcomber stretches to 3,988 mm.

Robertson also claimed that the two vehicles share a common element in the grille, but one look at the Moke's unusual grille proves otherwise. The Beachcomber retains none of the Moke's buggy feel, serving as little more than a teaser for the Crossover.

The Beachcomber Concept also has a soft roof and lightweight doors if the driver were to experience bad weather. Look for the concept's ALL4 all-wheel drive unit to appear on the Crossover, as well as the four dedicated seats.

Robertson did say that more information about the MINI Crossover will be revealed in February.

MINI E Electric Car Performance in Winter Testing

Recent snowfall gave me a chance to experience driving the MINI E electric car in snow and ice conditions, and the frigid northeast weather has been a test of its batteries.

I am leasing the MINI E for a one year period as a part of BMW’s field test trial, and am among 449 other drivers in California, New Jersey, and New York. At this point, after six months of driving, the car has just over 7700 miles.

There has been a pronounced decline in battery range in the cold weather. On a recent trip at a temperature of 23 degrees Fahrenheit and including a two-hour 110 volt charge in the middle, the battery meter hit zero miles/zero percent after just 55 miles (see graphic). The car is billed as having a 100 mile range.

Spy Shots: MINI Cooper S Diesel & Clubman S Diesel

    Mini Cooper S Diesel Prototype

The petrol Cooper S range uses a 1.6-litre twin scroll turbo for maximum power output of 128kW (172hp) and 240Nm of torque (260Nm with overboost). The MINI One D on the other hand kicks out only 66kW (90hp) and 215Nm while its Cooper D brother works with 80kW (110hp) and 240Nm.

    Mini Cooper S Diesel Prototype

Spy shooters posted outside Mini's testing facility in Germany snagged a duo of prototypes heading out for testing, but something seemed amiss. Both models -- a standard Cooper and a mildly camo'd Clubman -- sported the tell-tale exterior elements found on the S versions, specifically a central-mounted dual exhaust on the Cooper and the twin-tips and hood scoop on the Clubman. However, the exhaust note was decidedly diesel, causing us to wonder: Is Mini working on hotted-up S versions of its oil-burners?

    Mini Cooper S Diesel Prototype

What gave the game away was the distinctive engine sound that diesel-powered cars are known for. The front bumper is of a slightly different design as well. Some prototypes that have been spotted carried the cosmetic-only bonnet scoop, while others did not. Therefore we can't really say if it will be kept or not.

    Mini Cooper S Diesel Prototype

If they are -- and we're not convinced either way -- then a Cooper S and Clubman S diesel would need to benefit from more than a few design tweaks and an uprated suspension. Considering that the standard Mini D puts out around 90 horsepower and the Cooper D boasts another 20 bhp, then these S-ified models could be packing upwards of 140 to 150 hp and, more importantly, over 200 lb.-ft. of torque from their 1.6-liter turbodiesels. If they do make it to dealers, we'd expect them to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, with sales beginning in Europe late next year.

VIDEO: Second teaser for of Mini concept

The second video has arrived for the "2 B THRILLED" and "2 B DESIRED" Mini concepts that will show up in Frankfurt next week. This one moves things on a bit from the last one, but it's just as girl-power-ified and just as odd.

At this point, if we find the two concepts in a cage wearing bikinis at the show or in a subsequent video, we will not be surprised.

California - Mini Cooper Crossover spotted Spy Photos

Based on the Mini Crossover Concept that debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the production version appears to have more in common with the standard Mini Cooper than the extra large Clubman model. While it does sport an extra pair of doors like the Clubman, these prototypes appear to feature rear lift gates that swing up rather than being split vertically down the center. And while ground clearance does appear to be up relative to a standard Mini, these long-wheelbase, four-door Coopers are far from being rock crawlers.

Mini has been caught testing its upcoming Cooper Crossover in the deserts of California, and these two prototypes, despite their psychedelic paint schemes, provide the most clear view yet of the small soft roader. What's of particular note is that these two prototypes do not share the same front end, perhaps because one is the naturally aspirated model and the other turbocharged. The trailing Cooper Crossover prototype features a more typical Mini grille with horizontal slats and a fog light at each corner. The prototype leading the pack, however, features a mesh grille and lower air intake with two inlets.

MINI makes 1.5 million

Ian Robertson, Board Member of BMW, in front of the 1,5 millionth MINI at plant Oxford

ust over two years after reaching the 1-million vehicle production mark, MINI has made it to 1.5 million. Since the new MINI was introduced in 2001, the car has been a hit, and demand shows no signs of waning. The fact that this milestone has been reached during the Mini's 50th anniversary year adds significance for fans of the car as well. 5.3 million classic Minis were produced between 1959 and 2000. Total production for both cars is close to seven million vehicles.

Mini dealership network to expand by 20% to meet demand

The first new dealer network, which comes online later this year, will be in Birmingham, Alabama. The next 18 months will see still more openings in urban hotspots like Austin, Texas and Seattle, Washington. For a complete list of new locations, hit the jump to read the press release.

The next 18 months will be huge for BMW's MINI brand. Execs are looking for big sales increases by 2011, and the fuel efficient little car company is adding 17 dealerships to its retail network in that time frame to help get the job done. The additional dealerships will predominantly go to urban areas that don't currently have a MINI presence, bringing the total figure to 100 dealerships in the States.

MINI is looking for a "double digit increase" from 2008's record 54,077 U.S. sales by 2011; a number that is impressive considering the current state of industry sales, but more likely due to the addition of a new model line (Clubman) as much as anything else. With more dealers in the fold, the lofty sales goals ought to be attainable, though, provided the nation's economy improves.

AC Schnitzer's sportier take on the Mini Cooper Cabrio

Starting with the performance, the standard Cooper S Cabrio features a 175hp (131kW) 1.6L engine, but with performance upgrades this figure is increased to a more impressive 208hp (155kW). The car is also fitted with a limited-slip differential that can be had in both the Cooper S and the special John Cooper Works (JCW) performance variant. The engine upgrades are complemented with a new AC Schnitzer sports silencer in special steel with a chrome racing tailpipe for the Cooper S and JCW.

Mini's aren't exactly known for their aggressive or sporty styling, instead choosing to adopt a more 'cute' appearance at the behest of its designers. German tuning house AC Schnitzer, however, didn't agree with Mini’s original design theme and instead unveiled a new kit for the R57 Cooper Cabrio with a number of modifications to the engine, suspension, styling and aerodynamics.

Visually, the designers at AC Schnitzer have come up with new front spoilers and rear skirts for the car, which they claim also offer aerodynamic advantages on top of giving a sportier appearance. New decals on the side and custom alloy wheels also add to the car's appearance, while custom AC Schnitzer gear knobs, handbrakes, pedals and foot rests can be had inside, along with velour floor mats.

AC Schnitzer has also unveiled new suspension components, available in the form of a suspension spring kit and a height-adjustable racing suspension set-up. In conjunction with an aluminum strut brace for the front, the new suspension should make the Mini drop-top even more agile than it already is.
