Ford MyTouch Adds Eco-Route Feature to Save Fuel [Video]

Ford unwrapped its new MyFord Touch infotainment system at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in January, The fuel-efficiency of an engine is one way to save gas, but how that engine is used greatly effects fuel economy too.

The MyFord system also offers up a bar chart next to the fuel display that shows real-time fuel economy performance along with mpg averages for the past 5, 10, and 30 minutes. Impressive stuff, but Ford has some competition. Garmin's similarly titled ecoRoute software offers many of the same options--it maps the most fuel efficient routes, tracks fuel usage over time, and features a report that keeps track of mileage and fuel use on a per-trip basis.

The new system also provides sophisticated data feedback on the car's fuel consumption that can "coach" drivers to maximize efficiency by pointing them towards the most economical driving techniques.

MyFord Touch will launch on the 2011 Ford Edge this summer, and then in 2012 on the Ford Focus. MyLincoln Touch will be standard on new Lincoln vehicles, starting with the 2011 Lincoln MKX.

    Press Release

    NEW MYFORD TOUCH ‘COACHES' DRIVERS TO IMPROVE FUEL EFFICIENCY;
    NAVIGATION ADDS ECO-ROUTE FEATURE
    • New MyFord TouchTM driver connect technology provides an
array of real-time feedback on fuel efficiency performance that helps
coach drivers to optimize their miles per gallon
    • MyFord Touch map-based navigation offers an Eco-Route option, which
instantly calculates the most fuel-efficient route for the driver. Ford
testing shows Eco-Route can help achieve fuel economy gains of up to 15
      percent
    • MyFord Touch launches this summer on the 2011 Ford Edge and will be
available globally on the 2012 Ford Focus. MyLincoln Touch will be
standard equipment on new Lincoln vehicles beginning with the 2011
      Lincoln MKX

DEARBORN, Mich., April 15, 2010 - When it comes to achieving the best
possible fuel mileage the way you drive can be nearly as important as the
    vehicle you drive.

    Ford's advanced new in-vehicle system - MyFord TouchTM -
offers an array of real-time information on fuel economy performance that
can coach drivers to get more miles to the gallon and save on fuel costs. In
addition, MyFord Touch's map-based navigation system offers an

Eco-Route option that quickly calculates the most fuel efficient route a
driver can take to get from A to B.

MyFord Touch is the latest innovation from Ford to help drivers optimize
fuel economy. It builds on the fuel efficiency "coaching" concept Ford
    pioneered on its SmartGauge
TM with EcoGuide cluster for the 2010
Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid as well as the all-new 2011
Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The system provides real-time fuel economy data and
promotes fuel-efficient driving by showing a graphic of growing leaves and
    flowers.

"We have learned that when we provide drivers the information and tools
in an interactive and entertaining way, they want to drive more fuel
efficiently," said Jim Buczkowski, director of Global Electrical and
Electronics Systems Engineering. "MyFord Touch provides an unprecedented
level of information and interaction so drivers can make the choice to be
    more fuel efficient."

    The green road home

When a driver provides a destination to the navigation system, MyFord Touch
accesses historical and real-time traffic data as well as posted speed
information to calculate three navigation options: Fastest, Shortest and
    Eco-Route.

Eco-Route is not necessarily the fastest or shortest route but is the
most fuel efficient. Typically, it charts a course that avoids congested
freeways while maximizing the use of major roads where the driver can
maintain an efficient rate of speed. When Ford of Europe engineers tested
the feature, they achieved up to a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy
    using the Eco-Route.

"When drivers use Eco-Route - particularly in combination with MyFord
    Touch's fuel-economy feedback and fuel-efficient driving techniques - they
can achieve a noticeable increase in fuel efficiency," said Jennifer Brace-Mezigian,
    Ford user interface design engineer.

In addition to its Eco-Route feature, MyFord Touch enables drivers to
monitor and track their vehicle's real-time fuel economy performance and
mile-per-gallon averages for the past five, 10 and 30 minutes in the form of
a bar chart next to the fuel gauge on the display. Drivers can customize the
amount of information provided to meet their needs and hone their
    eco-driving skills over time.

"MyFord Touch not only gives drivers information they can use to improve
their driving habits, but also expands on that capability by engaging the
navigation system to give drivers a variety of options," Brace-Mezigian
said. "The benefits will be greater because MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch
will be widely available in the future."

    Eco-driving tips

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that the U.S. uses about
150 billion gallons of gasoline annually. If every driver practiced
eco-driving techniques, which can result in an EPA-estimated 15 percent
benefit in fuel economy, more than 22 billion gallons of gas would be saved.

Eco-driving techniques tested by Ford showed that motorists coached in
eco-driving can significantly improve the fuel economy performance of their
vehicles. Here are simple tips that any driver can use:

    1. Slow down and watch speed - Drive 55 mph instead of 65 to save fuel.
EPA estimates a 10 to 15 percent improvement in fuel economy by
following this tip. Also, aim for a constant speed. Pumping the
accelerator sends more fuel into the engine. Using cruise control
whenever possible on the highway helps maintain speed and conserve fuel.

    2. Accelerate and brake smoothly - Accelerating smoothly from a stop
and braking softly conserves fuel. Fast starts, weaving in and out of
traffic and hard braking wastes fuel and wears out some of the vehicle
components, such as brakes and tires, more quickly. Maintain a safe
distance between vehicles and anticipate traffic conditions to allow for
more time to brake and accelerate gradually.

    3. No idling - Today's engines don't need a warm-up. Start the car
immediately and gently drive away. Don't leave your car idling.
Prolonged idling increases emissions and wastes fuel. Turn the engine
off in non-traffic situations, such as at bank and fast food drive-up
windows, when idling more than 30 seconds.

    4. Check your tires - Keep tires properly inflated to the recommended
tire pressure. This alone can reduce the average amount of fuel use by 3
to 4 percent. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and
reduce fuel economy. They also wear more rapidly. Check the vehicle's
door-post sticker for minimum cold tire inflation pressure.

    5. Be kind to your vehicle - Maintain proper engine tune-up to keep
vehicles running efficiently. Keep the wheels aligned. Wheels that are
fighting each other wastes fuel. Replace air filters as recommended. Use
a fuel with good detergent additives to keep the vehicle engine clean
and performing efficiently. Always consult the owner's manual for proper
      maintenance.

    6. Travel light - Avoid piling a lot of luggage on the roof rack. The
added frontal area reduces aerodynamics and will hurt fuel economy,
reducing it by as much as 5 percent. Remove excess weight from the
vehicle. Unnecessary weight, such as unneeded items in the trunk, makes
the engine work harder and consumes more fuel.

    7. Minimize use of heater and air conditioning - Use heating and air
conditioning selectively to reduce the load on the engine. Decreasing
your usage of the air conditioner when temperatures are above 80 degrees
can help you save 10 to 15 percent of fuel. Use the vent setting as much
as possible. Park in the shade to keep the vehicle cool and reduce the
      need for air conditioning.

    8. Close windows at high speeds - Don't drive with the windows open
unless you keep your speed under 50 mph. Driving with the windows open
at highway speeds increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle and lowers
      fuel economy.

    9. Choose the right oil - Use good-quality oils with the viscosity
grade recommended in the owner's guide. Ford recommends SAE 5W-20 oil
for most cars and trucks to provide the best fuel economy. Only oils
"certified for gasoline engines" by the American Petroleum Institute
with the starburst symbol should be used.

    10. Consolidate trips - Plan ahead to consolidate your trips. This will
enable you to bypass congested routes and lead to less idling.

For additional information on how to save on gas, visit the Driving
Skills for Life Web site and click on the "eco-driving" module. Ford's
eco-driving initiative builds on the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers'
comprehensive nationwide effort to promote eco-driving at

Mountune Ford Focus RS MP350 performance package

Ford recently unveiled a 350-hp version of the Focus RS in a limited run of 500 units, which was reportedly sold out in the first 24 hours. The MP350 package is available for current RS owners, as well as new buyers.

The car hits 60mph in 5.4 seconds, compared to the RS500 hitting 62mph in 5.6 seconds.  With the MP350 kit, RS owners will reach 100mph (161 km/h) in 12.2 seconds, and 150mph (241 km/h) in 35.0 seconds.  Top speed is 165mph (266 km/h) on the car.

The upgrades won't exactly give you a proper RS500, but the power will be there. Some owners might even find it as a good thing, seeing as they won't be forced into the matte black paint scheme standard on the RS500.

The modifications consist of five key components; a new intercooler, a high-flow exhaust downpipe, a redesigned airbox, uprated fuel delivery module and recalibrated ECU. Owners will need to have the car modified either by Mountune directly, or through seven selected Ford dealerships around the country. The kit will be made available in other European markets later in the year.

delivers exceptional heating and cooling comfort.
    • Genuine Wood Trim - In addition to their exquisite appearance, the
Swirl Walnut and Olive Ash wood trims offered in the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
are eco-friendly as well. The veneers come from well-managed forests, as
defined by strict environmental, social and economic standards, and from
      other rigorously controlled sources.
    • Reverse Sensing System - This system senses what drivers might not
see behind them and relays an audible alert if objects are near, which
increases in frequency the closer a driver gets.
    • Keyless Entry Keypad - This Lincoln-exclusive feature provides
secure entry at a driver's fingertips. A personal combination holds a
memory for driver preferences. So if an owner is out for a run and
doesn't want to take the keys along, the vehicle can be opened with the
      touch of a few buttons.
    • Easy Fuel® Capless Fuel-Filler - This Lincoln-exclusive feature uses
an integrated spring-loaded flapper door to eliminate the need for a
fuel tank screw cap. That means no more fumbling to remove and tighten
the cap and less fuel odor on a driver's hands at the pump.
    • Personal Safety SystemTM - A Lincoln-exclusive suite of
seven protection technologies works together as a system to help protect
vehicle occupants. The system includes dual-stage front air bags and an
occupant classification system to sense whether the passenger seat is
occupied. It tailors - or suppresses - air bag deployment to help
provide an appropriate level of protection. It also features the Ford
Belt-Minder® system to remind front-seat occupants to buckle up.
    • MyKeyTM - This Lincoln-exclusive feature allows parents
to program a key to limit speed and audio volume to encourage teens to
drive safer and improve fuel efficiency. It also encourages seat belt
usage, provides earlier low-fuel warnings, and can be programmed to
sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 mph.
    • Integrated Spotter Mirrors - The traditional side-view mirrors are
designed with a secondary convex spotter mirror in the top outer corner,
which provides a view of the driver's blind spot. When traffic enters
the driver's blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in
the secondary convex mirror, alerting the driver of obstacles.
    • Acoustic Laminated Windshield - This windshield features a layer of
sound-absorbent vinyl sandwiched between two sheets of glass, which
      enhances interior quietness.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also includes standard Bridge of Weir leather
seats. The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland is unembossed,
allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through. The
leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a soft hand, and Bridge of
Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

New York Auto Show: Ford Focus RS500

Ford has just released the first images and details of the Ford Focus RS500 before the new version's unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

The Ford Focus RS500 is powered by a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine that produces 350 PS and 460 Nm of torque, which means 15 percent additional power when compared to the standard Focus RS.
According to Auto Express, the engine will be tuned by Mountune, and will be in matte black with black 19 inch alloy wheels.

"The company has announced that it will build only 500 units of the Ford Focus RS500 which will be sold in 20 European markets. This means that unfortunately, the U.S. will not get the Ford Focus RS500.

Each car will be fitted with a metal plaque on the dashboard which will be hand-engraved with its unique identification number."

    Press Release

A new and powerful limited edition Focus RS model, called the RS500, is being launched as the ultimate performance Ford and will provide the definitive driving experience for serious performance car enthusiasts.

Making its global debut at the 2010 Leipzig Motor Show in Germany on April 9, the new model has been given the Ford Focus RS500 designation to highlight its strictly-limited production run of 500 individually-numbered vehicles, all of which will be offered for customers to purchase.

The new Focus RS500 features a muscular 350 PS 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine, which generates 15 per cent more power than the standard Focus RS and delivers truly exhilarating performance.

The Ford Focus RS500’s breathtaking power is matched by an equally dramatic appearance. The limited edition model sports a unique matt black 'foil' paint finish with matching alloy wheels to deliver a powerful visual impact which is unlike any other production Ford.

“We were determined to mark the end of production for the current and acclaimed Focus RS with something even more special,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford of Europe's vice president for Product Development. “From its stunning looks to its intoxicating performance, we have no doubt that the Ford Focus RS500 will be appreciated and quickly snapped up by performance car enthusiasts.

“This vehicle joins a long line of iconic RS Fords and is a worthy recipient of the Ford Focus RS500 name, which became synonymous with success on the road and track with the legendary Sierra RS500 Cosworth that dominated saloon car racing during the late 1980s,” Bakaj added.

Strictly Limited Production Run of 500 Individually Numbered Vehicles The Ford Focus RS500 marks the end of production for the current generation Focus RS, with the last vehicles scheduled to leave Ford’s Saarlouis Assembly Plant in Germany during September 2010.

While overwhelming customer demand has ensured that total Focus RS output is expected to exceed 11,000 units (significantly more than the 7,000 to 8,000 originally forecast), production of the Ford Focus RS500 will start at Ford's Saarlouis plant in Germany during May and will be strictly limited to 500 customer vehicles for twenty European markets.

Each Ford Focus RS500 will carry a metal plaque on the centre console, hand-engraved with a unique identification number from 001 to 500.

A small number of pre-production vehicles produced for internal Ford use – such as product development or press demonstrators – will have their own unique numbering scheme, to ensure the exclusivity of the 500 customer cars.

Demand for the Ford Focus RS500 is expected to exceed supply by a considerable margin, and the full production run of just 500 vehicles is being allocated across 20 European markets in line with the anticipated level of interest. For some countries, the very small number of vehicles allocated means the Ford Focus RS500 will, indeed, be a very exclusive purchase for its customers.

A dedicated website – will allow customers and enthusiasts to gain further information, including projected quantities of available vehicles by market, plus access to download photography and video clips. The site will also provide links to national Ford websites so customers can identify dealers and prices.

Focus RS also has its own Facebook page – www.facebook.com/fordfocusrs – with more than 13,500 fans from across the world, and Ford Focus RS500 launch activities will be shared on this site.

    Upgraded 350 PS Powertrain

“The more urgent engine sound and sheer thrust of the mid-range performance tell the driver immediately that this is not a standard Focus RS,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director. “With 15 per cent more power and the same gutsy, sporting character, our new powertrain gives the Ford Focus RS500 the special engine it deserves.”

To provide the Ford Focus RS500 with a fitting power unit, the 305 PS turbocharged Duratec RS 2.5-litre engine from the standard Focus RS has been upgraded to deliver significantly more top-end and mid-range power, but without compromising the base engine’s strength and responsiveness at lower revs.

Peak power is increased by 45PS to 350PS at 6,000rpm, while torque has been increased from 440 to 460Nm, delivered across a broad speed range from 2,500 to 4,500rpm. To achieve the required balance of muscular mid-range and top-end performance, the engine has benefitted from a comprehensive package of enhancements aimed at improving the engine’s breathing and combustion.

The changes include a significantly larger air-to-air intercooler to deliver a cooler, denser charge; a larger air filter box for increased airflow; larger diameter exhaust downpipe; and an uprated fuel pump, along with an updated software calibration to optimise the performance of the revised engine.

“The engine’s improved breathing has allowed us to increase power without having to raise turbo boost pressure significantly,” explained Herrmann. “This has made it possible to enhance peak performance while maintaining the excellent driveability, fuel consumption and emissions of the standard Focus RS.”

Preliminary performance figures for the Focus RS500 indicate that it achieves 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds, with a top speed similar to the 263 km/h in the standard RS.

    Engineered by Performance Car Enthusiasts

The Focus RS500 engine has been modified by a team enthusiast engineers from Ford TeamRS in partnership with Revolve Technologies, the automotive engineering firm which develops Ford approved performance upgrades through its Mountune brand.

The shared development and testing programme ensured that the 350 PS Duratec RS engine achieved the specified performance targets while also delivering the standards of durability and serviceability expected by Ford RS customers.

The comprehensive engineering details already developed for the 305 PS Focus RS engine – including a revised cylinder head gasket, ultra-durable metal sprayed cylinder bores, revised pistons and new connecting rods – have ensured that no further mechanical changes were required to cope with the increased performance of the 350 PS Ford Focus RS500 unit. Advanced Front Wheel Drive Chassis

A key factor in the success of the latest generation Focus RS has been its advanced front wheel drive chassis, which combines a wider track, the unique ‘RevoKnuckle’ front suspension design and a Quaife helical limited slip differential to deliver responsive steering, outstanding traction and a minimum of unwanted torque steer.

The same chassis design has proved equally effective in handling the increased torque levels of the Ford Focus RS500, and the specification is unchanged for this application, helping to retain the same sporting and responsive dynamic character which is central to the appeal of the acclaimed standard Focus RS.

The high-performance braking system, and the 19-inch wheels and 235/35/R19 tyres, are also carried over unchanged from the standard vehicle, although red brake calipers and a dramatic black finish for the alloy wheels are unique to the RS500.

    Performance Tested to the Limit

In recognition of the extreme performance potential of the Ford Focus RS500, the limited edition model has been subjected to a series of concentrated durability tests which have focused on the car’s track capabilities.

The development programme included a dedicated endurance test at the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, where Ford TeamRS engineers were joined by three Ford-employed racing drivers working in shifts to complete 10,000km of non-stop driving, equivalent to competing in ten consecutive Nürburgring 24-hour races without a break.

“We wanted to be sure that serious enthusiasts could drive the Ford Focus RS500 to the limit on track, without any concerns about the car’s stamina,” said Matthias Tonn, Ford Focus RS500 Chief Programme Engineer. “This meant going beyond our standard test routines, and pushing the car to the edge of its performance envelope. After 500 non-stop laps of the Nürburgring, we are very confident of its durability and delighted at the way it performed, with an 8-minute lap time within reach”.

Unique Matt Black 'Foil' Paint Finish for Maximum Visual Impact

The standard Focus RS already creates a lasting impression with its functional yet striking design, but the unique matt black 'foil' paint finish of the Ford Focus RS500 makes this limited edition car even more special.

Stunning matt black bodywork is combined with matching metallic black alloy wheels, and the gloss black finish of the trapezoidal lower front grille and splitter, twin-blade rear spoiler and the rear venturi, which manages airflow beneath the rear of the car.

Small flashes of colour around the vehicle – including the red brake calipers, blue RS badges, and the special blue and red RS500 badge on the tailgate – only serve to emphasise the car’s unique appearance.

“We deliberately set out to ensure that the Ford Focus RS500 looks like no other production vehicle,” added Tonn. “With its dramatic black finish and imposing stance, this car really is mean, moody and magnificent!”

The matt black foil finish for the RS500 was developed in partnership with the technology company 3M, which specialises in advanced film products for the automotive industry.

All Ford Focus RS500 vehicles will be painted in a standard Panther Black metallic colour, before being shipped to a dedicated 3M facility near Frankfurt, Germany, where a special foil film will be applied to the bodywork to create the matt black effect.

The film is extremely durable, and is specifically designed to resist superficial marks and scratches in automotive applications. In the event of damage to the bodywork, Ford dealers will be fully supported by a Europe-wide network of 3M agents who can replace the film on the affected panels.

Special Ford Focus RS500 Interior Detailing

Attention to detail on the RS500 exterior is also reflected inside the car, with a series of special features which are unique to this limited edition model.

The centre console is distinguished by the car's individually-numbered metal plaque, and by a unique carbon-effect finish to the bezel which carries a distinctive RS pattern.

In contrast to the blue detailing on the standard Focus RS, the RS500 features a special red colour scheme, notably on the stitching of the leather trim on the steering wheel, door trim and gear lever gaiter, and on the floor mats.

Customers also have the option of specifying the bespoke Recaro front sports seats in full red leather, to further enhance the visual impact.

    Premium Specification for All Vehicles

All Ford Focus RS500 vehicles will be equipped to a very high specification as standard, with only two features available as optional items. In addition to the comprehensive equipment levels on the standard Focus RS, the RS500 includes the following features as standard:

    ? Dual-zone automatic climate control
    ? Heated windscreen
    ? Rear parking distance sensors
    ? Tyre deflation detection system
? Automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers
    ? Auto dimming rear-view mirror
    ? Ford key-free start
? Enhanced connectivity with Bluetooth®, voice control and USB port
    ? Sony 6-CD audio system
? Recaro sports front seats with partial leather trim

The two optional features are touchscreen DVD navigation and audio system, and the full leather Recaro front seats in red.

“We believe that customers lucky enough to secure one of the limited edition Ford Focus RS500 models will be getting a real collectors item,” said Joe Bakaj. “From its stunning looks, to its immense driver appeal and its complete specification, the Ford Focus RS500 provides enthusiasts with the ultimate performance Ford for the road.”

    Press Release

    Hummer H2 "Bomber"

Armed for any conditions: Hummer with Mattracks rubber tracks

In its regular trim, the Hummer H2 not only looks fantastic, but also brings with it a real degree of off-road capabilities. But this can go much further, as GeigerCars.de have proved with the "H2 Bomber" on rubber tracks.

In contrast to the regular wheels with their 8.5" x 20" rims encompassing 305/60 tyres, the specialists from Munich have equipped their project SUV with a Mattracks 88M1-A1 rubber tracks at each wheel. Those massive structures, 40cm wide and 150cm long, guarantee unrivalled traction on virtually any type of terrain, whether the vehicle is needed for agriculture, emergency services or expedition. Even extreme gradients are handled without a sweat, not least thanks to the powerful 8 cylinders under the bonnet which gives you 398 bhp and 574 Nm of torque.

How well the GeigerCars.de Hummer acquits itself on the rubber tracks can be left to Autobild editor Wolfgang Blaube to experience: He explored to legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in the depths of winter with the circuit covered in snow and was completely captured by the "new dimension of fun" after just a few kilometres.

Also in the interior of the GeigerCars.de "Bomber", finished in a matte silver, with extra headlights on the roof and the lettering printed in an army style, the fun factor is not missed out: The luxury design fulfils every wish and a sunroof is every bit a part of the Hummer project as the navigation system with a DVD drive from Kenwood, the roof monitor with headphones or the rear-view camera including a monitor in the rear-view mirror. If requested, the Geigercars team can of course equip each Hummer model with an economical LPG autogas system and other extras.

If you're on the lookout for an off-road master, the H2 is definitely the right choice. With a Hummer equipped with rubber tracks, no terrain remains inaccessible.
