    Press Release
    • Midsize Sedan Offers a New Level of Style and Performance Features from
      Kia
    • Three all-new powertrains, including turbo and Kia's first-ever hybrid
offer class- leading power and fuel economy
    • Segment-leading premium amenities and technology features
NEW YORK, April 1, 2010 – Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally unveiled
the all-new 2011 Optima midsize sedan at the New York International Auto
Show. Arriving in showrooms in early fall, the next generation Optima
continues Kia's design-led transformation while revealing a completely new
and stunning design language for Kia, highlighted by a dynamic and
streamlined profile that conveys elegance and athletic confidence from every
angle. Optima's groundbreaking spirit continues under the hood and inside
the cabin with the introduction of three new powertrains – including the
    brand's first-ever hybrid in the U.S. (available in 2011) – which deliver
class-leading power1 and fuel economy while the latest technology features
and luxury amenities are available at the touch of a button or a simple
    voice command.

Designed at Kia's studios in Frankfurt and Irvine, Calif., the all-new
Optima is longer, wider and lower than the vehicle it replaces and is based
on an all-new midsize platform that allowed for distinctive dimensions and
proportions in the segment1 while also providing a unique canvas for Kia's
global design team to pen a vehicle that stands apart from everything else
    in the segment.

"The all-new Optima is a new strand in Kia's growing design DNA with a blend
of simple and fluid lines and elegant but uncomplicated shapes that draw the
attention of the eye in much the same fashion as a perfectly-tailored fine
Italian suit," said Peter Schreyer, chief design officer, Kia Motors
Corporation. "From the distinctive sweeping chrome accent that stretches
through the C pillars to the sleek greenhouse and flared wheel arches, every
inch of the Optima projects a distinguished and refined style and extreme
    attention to detail."

The all-new Optima also employs engine management systems like direct
injection and turbocharging to help bring performance to the brand without
sacrificing fuel efficiency. Its smooth-flowing lines speak of grace and
style and offer a strong hint of European luxury.

    Sleek and Streamlined Exterior

The 2011 Optima projects a high-performance yet elegant image with its
unique silhouette and sleek stance that builds upon Kia Motors' philosophy
of creating high quality and dynamic vehicles that evoke passion. The
striking face of Optima features Kia's signature bold tabbed grille that is
surrounded by projector headlamps. Longer, wider and lower than before,
Optima's coupe-like profile is enhanced by a sweeping chrome arc that flows
from the A through C pillars, a distinctive design motif that visually
lowers the car further and enhances its proportions. Optima's roofline
connects with its high and pronounced shoulder line that leads to its
sculpted flanks and extended wheelbase. Boldly flared wheel arches and a
raked cabin create a sedan with a graceful muscular stance.

Available in three trims, LX, EX and SX, the 2011 Optima offers numerous
standard features. The LX includes dual exhaust with chrome tips, solar
glass, outside mirror turn signal indicators and 16-inch steel wheels fitted
with 205/65R16 tires. Upgrading to the EX offers standard fog lights, heated
outside mirrors, exterior chrome/body-color door handles along with 17-inch
alloy wheels with P215/55/R17 tires. Moving up to the athletic SX adds HID
headlights with auto leveling, LED rear combination lights, unique front
grille design, rear lip spoiler, sculpted side sills, aero wiper blades, red
brake calipers and 18-inch black machined finish alloy wheels furnished with
P225/45R18 tires, achieving a true performance look.

    Luxuriously Equipped Interior

From the moment the door opens, Optima presents an immediate sense of a
driver's car. The instrument panel is contoured toward the driver to suggest
a cockpit feel with precise gauges and controls for an overall sport
performance experience without sacrificing comfort or roominess. Paddle
shifters behind the steering wheel convey that Optima is built for people
who are passionate about cars. A high console with a short shifter adds to
the cockpit perception while an available panoramic sunroof provides an
open-air feeling. Offering occupants both space and comfort with a number of
standard convenience features, the sedan's chic cabin unifies with the
exterior design by welcoming its passengers with lean and ergonomic seat
design and effective storage throughout. Modern standard features such as
six-way adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, illuminated
vanity mirrors and a trip computer further expand the cabin's luxurious
    qualities.

In addition to offering a comfortable cabin, impressive technology features
also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system
with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary
service. Also standard on all trims are auxiliary and USB audio input jacks
for connecting with MP3 players and Bluetooth® wireless technology
connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable
hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones.

Additional standard interior features include a tilt/telescopic steering
column, power door locks, power windows, sun visor extension and an
air-conditioned glove box. Stylishly appointed cloth seats provide
comfortable seating while a 60/40 split-folding rear seat offers multiple
seating and cargo arrangements depending on driver and passenger needs.
Optima LX with automatic transmission features cruise control and an active
EcoMinder® indicator for optimal fuel efficient driving.

Optima EX comes well-equipped and offers premium standard features,
including the UVO powered by Microsoft® infotainment system with rear-view
camera, push button-start ignition with smart key, dual-zone automatic air
conditioning with rear vents, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift
knob, auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink® and compass, auto light
control, driver and front passenger automatic window up/down and eight-way
power driver's seat, lighted glovebox, rear reading lamps, floor mats and
    chrome door handles.

For consumers looking for even more sporty appeal, the Optima SX adds unique
black leather woven seat trim, black interior trim with carbon insert film
and metal accent, Supervision™ meter cluster with LCD display, center fascia
and meter housing, soft trim with French seams, steering wheel paddle
shifters, metal pedals and lighted metal door scuff plates.

Available upgrades for the Optima EX and SX trims include a power panoramic
sunroof, leather seat trim, memory driver's seat, heated and cooled front
seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel for additional interior
refinement. Luxuriously appointed features, including an Infinity® 5.1
surround sound audio system with HD Radio®, and eight speakers delivering in
excess of 500-watts of system power and voice-activated navigation system
with a seven-inch screen enhance the cabin for audiophiles or those who seek
the latest superior quality technology for a modern driving experience.

    All-New Advanced Platform

The 2011 Optima is distinctive, right down to its all-new platform. Optima's
low, lean and powerful stance is assisted through its overall length of
190.7 inches, an increase of 1.7 inches over the previous model. Optima is
built on a platform with an overall width of 72 inches and wheelbase of 110
inches, an increase of 2.9 inches, and has a low ground clearance of 5.3
inches for enhanced aerodynamics. Optima's lightweight design uses
high-tensile-strength steel to enhance structural strength while also
achieving high torsional stiffness, benefiting handling, ride quality and
refinement. Additional measures to help ensure good noise vibration and
harshness (NVH) reduction qualities are fitted throughout the Optima.

Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Optima utilizes independent
front and rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts are used in the front
with a multi-link layout in the rear and are both joined with coil springs
and front anti-roll bars to engage drivers with responsive handling and
provide the utmost comfort whether the road is smooth or less than ideal.

    Class-Leading Efficient and Powerful Engines

The 2011 Optima is available in three all-new and fuel-efficient Theta II
    powerplants, a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine or
a 2.4-liter hybrid. The 2.4-liter GDI engine produces 200 horsepower and
upgrading to the available 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine (SX model) delivers
    V6-type power with a four-cylinder engine that produces 274 horsepower1,
while mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This represents Kia's
first application of GDI technology, while a 2.4-liter hybrid Optima will be
introduced in 2011. All automatics feature Sportmatic™ clutchless shifting.
A single six-speed manual transmission is available only with the LX
    four-cylinder model.

    Safety-Minded

The 2011 Optima is equipped with a high level of standard safety features,
as is the rest of the Kia line-up. This includes six airbags (dual advanced
front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain),
front active headrests, side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front
seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, three-point seatbelts for
all seating positions, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) and a
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Four-wheel antilock brakes (ABS),
Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Traction Control System (TCS), a Brake
Assist System (BAS) and Hill Assist Control (HAC) also are standard.

    Competitive Warranty

The 2011 Optima is covered by Kia's warranty program, which offers
unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a
    10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile
    limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation
warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of
    the vehicle coverage.

    Kia Motors America in 2010

Kia Motors is in the midst of a dramatic, design-led transformation, which
has been delivering dynamically styled vehicles in several important
segments at exactly the right time, contributing to the brand's continued
gains in U.S. market share. With three new vehicle introductions and several
other key initiatives planned for 2010, Kia is poised to continue its
momentum and will continue to build the brand through design innovation,
quality, value, safety features and with new technology such as the UVO
powered by Microsoft® advanced hands-free in-car communication and
entertainment system (to be available in select Kia models in the U.S.
beginning in summer 2010). The launch of the all-new 2011 Sorento CUV, the
official vehicle of the NBA and the first vehicle to be assembled at Kia's

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower (142 kW). The pure electric mode on the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid extends to 47 mph (76 km/h). The 2011 MKZ Hybrid also offers a new implementation of FOrd’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide. The interactive technology provides real-time information to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency, and coaches drivers on how to optimize hybrid performance.

These are the SmartGauge with EcoGuide known as the successful interactive technology provides real-time information to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency but also the Lincoln SYNC (Lincoln-exclusive voice-activated communications and entertainment system), 10-way power passenger seat, power driver memory seat settings, heated and cooled front seats, genuine wood trim, reverse sensing system, keyless entry keypad, easy fuel capless fuel-filter, personal safety system, MyKey, integrated spotter mirrors and acoustic laminated windshield.

    Press Release

LINCOLN INTRODUCES FIRST HYBRID; NEW MKZ HYBRID TO BE MOST
    FUEL-EFFICIENT LUXURY SEDAN IN AMERICA
    • New 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid expected to be most fuel-efficient
      luxury sedan in America
    • Lincoln MKZ Hybrid takes SmartGaugeTM with EcoGuide to
next level, offering drivers enhanced positive feedback on long-term
      fuel efficiency and driving performance
    • More standard luxury, technologies and segment-exclusive safety
features in the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid help it top its nearest
competitor, the 2010 Lexus HS 250h

NEW YORK, March 31, 2010 - Lincoln today introduces its first hybrid -
the new 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid - a premium midsize car poised to be the
most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America.

Ford Motor Company - America's largest domestic hybrid seller - is
further broadening its aggressive electrification plan and second generation
of hybrid technology with the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The vehicle is
revealed today at the New York International Auto Show.

"Lincoln's hallmarks are design, technology and comfort. Now, Lincoln
also delivers the best fuel efficiency of any luxury sedan in America," said
Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas.

Lincoln's first-ever hybrid is expected to deliver at least 41 miles per
gallon in the city when it goes on sale this fall.

The new premium midsize sedan hybrid joins Ford Motor Company's growing
lineup of hybrids, including the Ford Fusion Hybrid - 2010 North American
Car of the Year and America's most fuel-efficient sedan - plus the Ford
Escape Hybrid and Mercury Milan and Mariner Hybrids.

Introduction of the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also complements Ford's
aggressive global electrification plan. Ford is introducing five new
electrified vehicles by 2013. They include the Transit Connect Electric in
late 2010, the Focus Electric in 2011, a next-generation hybrid electric
vehicle and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2012, followed by
another next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2013.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid's projected fuel economy tops its nearest
competitor - the 2010 Lexus HS 250h - by 6 mpg. It also trumps the Lexus
with room for one more passenger and more standard luxury and
    segment-exclusive safety features.

"Today's luxury customers do not want to make sacrifices. Lincoln has
found a way to deliver a luxury sedan with the comforts they expect, the
technology they want and the environmental responsibility society demands,"
said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president, Global Product Development.

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses Ford's second-generation hybrid
technology - the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine, named one of
    Ward's 2010 "10 Best Engines."

The system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and
electric battery-driven motors to deliver optimal performance and fuel
    economy.

Industry-leading fuel economy comes without sacrificing power. The
combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower.
Plus, the pure electric mode on the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid extends to 47 mph -
compared with the Lexus HS 250h battery-only mode, which reaches just 25
    mph.

    More standard luxury

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid comes standard with features and technologies
that are either not offered on the Lexus HS 250h or are available only at an
    extra cost. They include:

    • SmartGauge with EcoGuide - Ford's highly successful interactive
technology provides real-time information to help drivers maximize fuel
efficiency, and coaches drivers on how to optimize hybrid performance.
Lincoln takes SmartGauge to the next level of engagement by giving
drivers enhanced positive feedback on long-term fuel efficiency and
driving performance through the "growth" of virtual small flowers on the
system's right-most screen. Lincoln's white flowers, inspired by apple
blossoms, remain permanently unless long-term fuel economy is reset.
    • Lincoln SYNC® - The Lincoln-exclusive voice-activated communications
and entertainment system provides an omnipresent link to contacts and
information. In addition to Bluetooth® phone, audible text and MP3
player capabilities, Lincoln customers also can access Vehicle Health
      Report and 911 Assist
      TM.
    • 10-Way Power Passenger Seat - This seat is designed to accommodate a
diverse group of passengers. Memory functions enable passengers to
      fine-tune and recall their positions.
    • Power Driver Memory Seat Settings - The driver seat memory feature
helps ensure personal seating preferences anytime, with the touch of a
      button.
    • Heated and Cooled Front Seats - This uniquely engineered system
delivers exceptional heating and cooling comfort.
    • Genuine Wood Trim - In addition to their exquisite appearance, the
Swirl Walnut and Olive Ash wood trims offered in the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
are eco-friendly as well. The veneers come from well-managed forests, as
defined by strict environmental, social and economic standards, and from
      other rigorously controlled sources.
    • Reverse Sensing System - This system senses what drivers might not
see behind them and relays an audible alert if objects are near, which
increases in frequency the closer a driver gets.
    • Keyless Entry Keypad - This Lincoln-exclusive feature provides
secure entry at a driver's fingertips. A personal combination holds a
memory for driver preferences. So if an owner is out for a run and
doesn't want to take the keys along, the vehicle can be opened with the
      touch of a few buttons.
    • Easy Fuel® Capless Fuel-Filler - This Lincoln-exclusive feature uses
an integrated spring-loaded flapper door to eliminate the need for a
fuel tank screw cap. That means no more fumbling to remove and tighten
the cap and less fuel odor on a driver's hands at the pump.
    • Personal Safety SystemTM - A Lincoln-exclusive suite of
seven protection technologies works together as a system to help protect
vehicle occupants. The system includes dual-stage front air bags and an
occupant classification system to sense whether the passenger seat is
occupied. It tailors - or suppresses - air bag deployment to help
provide an appropriate level of protection. It also features the Ford
Belt-Minder® system to remind front-seat occupants to buckle up.
    • MyKeyTM - This Lincoln-exclusive feature allows parents
to program a key to limit speed and audio volume to encourage teens to
drive safer and improve fuel efficiency. It also encourages seat belt
usage, provides earlier low-fuel warnings, and can be programmed to
sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 mph.
    • Integrated Spotter Mirrors - The traditional side-view mirrors are
designed with a secondary convex spotter mirror in the top outer corner,
which provides a view of the driver's blind spot. When traffic enters
the driver's blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in
the secondary convex mirror, alerting the driver of obstacles.
    • Acoustic Laminated Windshield - This windshield features a layer of
sound-absorbent vinyl sandwiched between two sheets of glass, which
      enhances interior quietness.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also includes standard Bridge of Weir leather
seats. The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland is unembossed,
allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through. The
leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a soft hand, and Bridge of
Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

Hybrid Synergy Drive® - Full Hybrid technology

The new Auris HSD is a full hybrid capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive® system delivers the energy-saving benefits of a series hybrid combined with the performance benefits of a parallel hybrid.
Full hybrid technology equips the new Toyota hatchback with impressive, seamless acceleration and remarkably quiet operation, while returning class-leading fuel efficiency and the lowest possible emissions.

The Auris HSD’s latest generation, series/parallel full hybrid system features a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine, a powerful electric motor, a generator, a high performance battery and a power control unit. A power split device employs a planetary gear set to combine and re-allocate power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to operational requirements.
Key to the successful installation of Hybrid Synergy Drive® within the Auris front-engined platform, the electric motor, generator and power split device are all housed in one transmission casing the size of a conventional gearbox. The full hybrid drive system’s seamless, electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by shift-by-wire technology, using an electric shift lever system.

System power is provided by a lightweight, highly compact, 4-cylinder, 1798 cc, Atkinson cycle VVT-i petrol engine developing 98 PS (72 kW) at 5200 rpm and 142 Nm (105 lb-ft) of torque at 4000 rpm, and a high performance, permanent magnet, synchronous 60 kW electric motor generating a maximum 207 Nm (153 lb-ft) of torque from 0-13000 rpm.
Powered by the hybrid battery, the electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration during normal driving. The electric motor alone powers the driven wheels when the Auris HSD is operating in EV mode.

During deceleration and under braking, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking. Normally wasted as heat, kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.

In combination, the 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum system power output of 136 PS (100 kW), offering performance to match any conventional 2.0 litre diesel or petrol hatchback. Conversely, the Auris HSD returns low CO2 emissions of 89 g/km . In addition, the Auris HSD generates significantly lower NOx emissions than diesel engined cars of comparable performance.

Moreover, when operating in a unique, switchable EV mode, the Auris HSD offers zero CO2 and NOx emissions, driving for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to approximately 50 km/h, dependant on battery charge and driving conditions.

The Auris HSD offers four driving modes, including three on-demand modes, which not only maximise the capabilities of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain, but also incorporate comprehensive Eco driving support for those who wish to adopt more environmentally friendly driving techniques.

An EV mode allows for ultra-quiet running on electric motor power alone, resulting in zero fuel consumption and emissions; an ECO mode maximises hybrid system efficiency and fuel economy; and a POWER mode boosts system performance. In addition, an Eco Drive Monitor helps drivers maximise the fuel efficiency of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® system.

Via the multi-information indicator in the combination meter, drivers may monitor the flow of energy within the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system for each driving mode. This helps them develop relaxed, fuel efficient driving techniques and maximise system efficiency. In addition, a simple yet clear power consumption gauge in the combination meter shows how much power is being used or generated at any given time.

Taking advantage of the inherent operational quietness of Hybrid Synergy Drive®, particular attention has also been paid to Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) reduction measures. This ensures customers enjoy a calm, quiet cabin environment at all vehicle speeds. Road and engine noise have been rigorously suppressed through the comprehensive use of sound-proofing materials. 2010 BMW 5-Series ActiveHybrid Concept [Video]

The new concept car offers a particularly good rendition of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in all its dynamic, efficient and innovative qualities, at the same time representing the ongoing development of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 with their drivetrain technology already in production.

The drive system featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid consists of a straight-six gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric drive. Integration of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a sedan already extremely efficient with its "conventional" combustion engine reduces both fuel consumption and emissions once again by more than 10 per cent. At the same time the electric motor offers a boost function, supporting the gasoline engine in generating particularly dynamic drive power for an even more sporting driving experience in the car.

Intelligent energy management likewise serves to enhance the efficiency of the overall system, its unique functions ensuring appropriate control and management of all energy paths within the car and appropriate interaction of the drivetrain components precisely adjusted to driving conditions.

The drivetrain technology featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring in city traffic. At the same time a special hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function offers additional efficiency by consistently switching off the combustion engine when stopping at the traffic lights, a road junction, or in congested traffic. Optimised comfort, finally, is provided by the auxiliary climate control function already featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

Special development of ActiveHybrid technology as part of BMW EfficientDynamics.

The concept car based on the new BMW 5 Series Sedan for the first time presents the next generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, a special solution exclusive to BMW for intelligent interaction of the combustion engine and electric drive focused specifically on the requirements made of a dynamic sedan in the upper midrange segment.

Taking this approach, BMW is consistently continuing the development of hybrid technology according to a modular principle (best of hybrid), thus offering the optimum rendition of BMW ActiveHybrid technology for each concept and vehicle segment.

In accordance with the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, this ensures highly effective and practical use of hybrid technology for the reduction of both fuel consumption and emissions.

Also in the BMW Series Sedan segment: the BMW among hybrids combines supreme dynamics with maximum efficiency.

The combustion engine is supported in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid by an electrical drive system developed specifically for this model and arranged in compact dimensions between the straight-six combustion engine and the automatic transmission. Drawing its energy from a high-voltage battery at the back of the car, the electric motor develops maximum output of 40 kW.

An automatic clutch connects the gasoline engine and the electric motors.

Due to the particularly high level of torque generated from the start through the electric motors, the interaction of the two drive systems ensures extremely spontaneous and dynamic acceleration whenever required.

Perfectly integrated, precisely controlled: high-voltage battery supplying power to both the electric motor and the on-board network.

In overrun and when applying the brakes, the electric drive systems acts as a generator developing electric power fed into the high-voltage battery. This converts kinetic energy otherwise wasted as heat in the brake system into electric power saved for subsequent use.
Such energy obtained without any further consumption of fuel may then be used to generate drive power or operate electrical functions in the car.

This principle is the same as that of Brake Energy Regeneration already applied in BMW's current production models, with the level of electrical energy generated by the electric motor being significantly greater and the increase in efficiency correspondingly higher.

The high-voltage battery likewise developed for this specific concept is fitted within a high-strength special case near the rear axle of the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid. This leads to an optimum position in terms of both safety and harmonious weight distribution. An integrated control unit permanently analyses the charge status of the high-voltage battery and controls both the battery charge process by way of Brake Energy Regeneration and the system cooling process. Apart from the electric motor, the high-voltage battery also delivers electric power to the car's on-board network. Among other things, this allows efficient operation of the car's auxiliary climate control activated whenever required by a remote control function to cool down the car's interior significantly even before starting the engine.

Convenient use of the all-electric driving mode and the Auto Start Stop function is likewise guaranteed in this way, with all electrical functions such as the audio system, climate control or navigation remaining fully available even with the combustion engine switched off.

Unique: intelligent energy management with advance analysis of driving conditions.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology provides its unique potential in terms of both efficiency and driving dynamics under all kinds of conditions and throughout a wide load range.

Unlike conventional hybrid cars whose extra efficiency is largely limited to city traffic, both the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, by combining the combustion engine and the electric motor, are able to offer significantly lower fuel consumption and emission ratings also at higher speeds. This is made possible by technically sophisticated power electronics masterminding the interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor and thus optimising the overall efficiency of the drive system as a whole.

The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid once again raises the range of functions provided by such power electronics to an even higher standard. As an example, the energy contained in the fuel and provided by the high-voltage battery may now be used even more specifically and efficiently to provide that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW.

Taking additional factors into account, the interaction of the two drive units in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is tailored to the driver's requirements and current driving conditions with maximum precision. At the same time the power electronics also control the operation of the car's ancillary units and comfort functions, again in the interest of maximum efficiency.

The range and diversity of parameters taken into account by the system is indeed quite unique in the automobile, just as the number of functions controlled in this way. A high level of all-round networking allows the power electronics to provide intelligent energy management, thus optimising the operating strategy of the entire vehicle under all conditions.

A further unique feature of energy management in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is the car's ability to adjust its operating strategy not just to current, but also to upcoming driving conditions. To do this the power electronics from the start evaluate data indicating a possible change in exterior conditions or the driver's wishes and prepare the components in the drivetrain as well as the car's electronic system for a possible change in requirements.

To analyse driving conditions up front, the system uses data provided by engine and chassis management as well as the sensors in the driver assistance systems on board the car. Data saved in the navigation system on the route chosen by the driver likewise goes into the final calculation, enabling the system to forecast driving conditions on the route directly ahead. Then, proceeding from this analysis, the car is coordinated in advance and the optimum use of all systems serves to use the energy available with maximum efficiency.

Should the system determine, for example, that the autobahn ahead is about to lead downhill, the charge level of the high-voltage battery is intelligently controlled in advance to regain brake energy upfront with maximum efficiency.

Similarly, the high-voltage battery may be fully charged in good time before the driver reaches his destination, enabling the system to switch off the combustion engine at an early point and change to all-electric drive along the final stretch of road. Indeed, this forward-looking function is able to extend the cruising range on electric power by up to 30%.

The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid: the future of driving pleasure and efficiency in the upper midrange segment.

Optimised to an even higher standard in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid, the drivetrain and control systems underline the great significance of hybrid technology as a cornerstone of BMW EfficientDynamics. Looking at a new generation of hybrid technology from BMW featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid therefore offers particularly attractive perspectives, the ongoing development of BMW ActiveHybrid technology serving to provide substantial progress in all areas leading to a harmonious all-round concept with distinctive features typical of the brand.

The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid is therefore more dynamic, efficient and more intelligent than conventional representatives of this drive technology, standing out clearly as the BMW among hybrid cars in this segment.
