New Opel Meriva: Opening the door to greater flexibility [Video]

Geneva/Rüsselsheim. Innovative, versatile and stylish: the second generation Opel Meriva, making its world premiere at Geneva, raises the bar for automotive versatility. It is packed with a multitude of innovative features, engineered to optimize the flexible use of space and presented in a distinctive, contemporary design.

Opel created a new market segment for small, affordable monocabs when it launched the first generation Meriva in 2003. With its revolutionary FlexSpace rear-seating concept, high seating position and roomy cabin, it has always been big on flexibility yet small in size.

Now the second generation Meriva takes affordable, on-board flexibility to a new level. It introduces FlexDoors, innovative rear-hinged rear doors that facilitate cabin access - an industry first for a volume manufacturer. Greater interior stowage space is also enhanced by FlexRail, a revolutionary concept for adaptable center console storage. All this, in addition to an easy-to-use FlexSpace seating system and the option of Opel's unique FlexFix integrated rear bicycle carrier.

The Meriva's dynamic proportions brings elegance to the small monocabs. Its expressive exterior and interior styling carries forward Opel's new award-winning sculptural design language already introduced on the Insignia and Astra. A distinctive wave graphic for the rear side windows accentuates the Meriva's FlexDoors, while also improving the view for rear passengers, particularly children.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

Entering a new era of doors

Meriva opens up a new dimension in rear seat access with its unique rear-hinged rear doors. Unlike some current designs, the Meriva's FlexDoors are full-sized. The use of a conventional B-pillar enables them to be opened independently, without the need for a clamshell overlap by the front doors.

FlexDoors make it easy to get in and out of the rear seat without any twisting or sliding. It's also more convenient for parents to reach in to help buckle up children. For optimum access, FlexDoors open up to 84 degrees, much wider than conventional doors. The Meriva's front occupants also enjoy the same wide-opening access.

When the front and rear doors are open at the same time, a natural safety zone is also created. A door no longer separates a child and its parent and parents can keep an eye on their kids, for example, when getting out of the car. It's also more convenient for the driver or front passenger to open a FlexDoor when stowing a jacket, briefcase or an umbrella behind the front seat, for example.

Apart from better ergonomics, FlexDoors add a touch of style. Stepping in and out of the vehicle not only feels much more natural, it looks cool and elegant.

The FlexDoors concept has been successfully market-tested with Meriva customers since 2006. A patented locking system including a highly-sophisticated FlexDoors logic ensures the passengers are always protected whenever the vehicle is in motion.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

    New dimensions in on-board versatility

Increased flexibility is extended to all areas of the new Meriva. The innovative FlexSpace rear seating system has been further developed and refined and it is now more intuitive to move or fold the seats down, making the system easy to use.

Throughout the cabin, storage space is considerably increased with convenient locations provided for items which are most commonly carried inside a car. The revolutionary FlexRail console system consists of exchangeable storage units that slide on aluminum rails located between the front seats. It provides convenient and adaptable storage for many different uses. The FlexRail system was made possible because of the high mounted gear shift lever and the electric parking brake.

The new, generously proportioned seats, similar to those of the Astra and Insignia, offer a class-leading range of adjustment - 240 mm forwards/backwards and 65 mm in height.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

Monocab expression of new Opel design

Meriva moves forward Opel's new, expressive design language - sculptural artistry meets German precision - with the same focus on quality already seen on Insignia and the new Astra.
A lower, sweeping roof-line and Opel's signature blade side-body motif combine with the wave rear window line to give the new Meriva a fresh, distinctive character.

Inside, the wraparound wing-shaped instrument panel enhances the feeling of width and roominess, while the forward-leaning center stack also adds sculptured space. The cabin is available with six different levels of color and trim, the widest choice ever offered for a single Opel model.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

    Efficient performance

The new Opel Meriva will be offered with an engine line-up ranging from 55 kW/75 hp to 103 kW/140 hp. All engines comply with the Euro5 emissions standards.

The gasoline line-up will offer three variants of the 1.4-liter multi-valve engine. Variable valve timing, for improved breathing, is a feature of the entry 100 hp 1.4-liter, the only naturally-aspirated unit in the line-up. The choice is completed by the 1.4-liter Turbo engine introduced on the new Astra range, offered here in two output versions: 88 kW/120 hp or 103 kW/140 hp. The top-of-the-line 1.4 Turbo is equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The diesel line-up starts with a 55 kW/75 hp, 1.3 CDTI engine fitted with closed loop technology. This control system improves fuel consumption: Opel is the first to adopt it on such a small engine. The diesel offer is completed with the 1.7 CDTI motor (74 kW/100 hp) with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Later this year, the engine line-up will gain three additional diesel variants: A low CO2 emitting ecoFLEX variant will be powered by the 70 kW/95 hp 1.3 CDTI engine. Two variants of the 1.7 CDTI engine will also be available, developing 81 kW/110 hp and 96 kW/130 hp respectively; both are equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission.

The new Meriva benefits from a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks, which contribute to improved handling and greater ride comfort.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

    New champion

"With the Zafira Flex 7 and the Meriva's FlexSpace seating concepts, we invented a new fully integrated, on-board flexibility," says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Opel/Vauxhall. "For the new Meriva, we wanted to engineer the new versatility champion in the automotive industry. I don't see any other car offering so many features that make life easier."

Designed and developed at Opel's engineering center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new Meriva will be built in Zaragoza, Spain. It is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

New Opel Meriva now available starting at 15,900 euros

The new Opel Meriva premieres today at the 80th Geneva Motor Show and can now be ordered in Germany as well as in several other European countries. Prices for Opel's new flexibility champion start at 15,900 euros in Germany for the entry-level 1.4-liter (74 kW/100 hp) gasoline engine.

Opel created a new market segment for highly versatile yet small and affordable monocabs when it launched the first generation Meriva in 2003. The second generation Meriva is again a pioneer in fully integrated, on-board flexibility by introducing FlexDoors, innovative rear-hinged rear doors that facilitate cabin access - an industry first for a volume manufacturer. The Meriva's famous FlexSpace rear-seating concept has been further developed to become even more intuitive and easy to use. Greater stowage capacity is further enhanced by FlexRail, a revolutionary concept for adaptable center console storage, and Opel's unique FlexFix integrated rear bicycle carrier.

    2010_Opel-Meriva

The Opel Meriva will be available in three equipment levels: Essentia, Enjoy and Cosmo.

As usual on its models, Opel offers an extensive active and passive safety equipment, such as: ESP, front airbags, side and curtain airbags, seat belt reminders front and rear, front seat belt force limiters and pretensioners, adaptive brake lights, the Opel Pedal Release System as well as ISOFIX for rear outer seats.

The Essentia entry level models already offer rich equipment with - of course - the FlexSpace and FlexDoors systems, but also the space saving Electric Park Brake (EPB), heated power exterior mirrors, power windows in the front, remote control for doors, tailgate and fuel filler cap locking, the FlexFloor (the floor can be raised to bumper height for ease of loading and under-floor stowage), a seat height adjuster for the driver as well as a height and reach-adjustable steering column.

The Enjoy level also adds air conditioning, a radio CD300 system with MP3 and the innovative FlexRail storage system between the front seats that features a tray with cup holder. Side and curtain head airbags are standard as of Enjoy (optional on Essentia). For the interior, the customer can choose between three colour combinations.

Compared to Enjoy, the upper Cosmo execution adds front and rear power windows, front fog lamps, a board computer, cruise control, a leather steering wheel with controls, the flexible front armrest from the FlexRail system as well as 16-inch alloy wheels. The Cosmo trim level is available in two colour combinations for the interior.

True to the Opel philosophy of making innovative technology affordable, equipment such as the halogen directional AFL headlights (Adaptive Forward Lighting), the heated steering wheel, the panorama sunroof, Hill Start Assist or the AGR*-certified ergonomic front sport seats - a unique feature in the segment - are also available.

The new Opel Meriva will be offered with an engine line-up ranging from 55 kW/75 hp to 103 kW/140 hp. All engines comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard.

First Video for Opel Meriva Interior

    • Innovative Opel extends leadership in flexibility with an array of creative features
    • Clever: FlexSpace and FlexRail provide storage to meet customers real needs
    • Stylish: New look carries forward Opel’s focus on design language

Rüsselsheim. Opel extends its champion role in the monocab class with the next generation Meriva, bringing innovations – like FlexDoors, FlexSpace, FlexRail and FlexFix – and versatility to a new level not yet seen in its class. And it does so without compromising on the Meriva’s great new look.

Carrying forward Opel’s new flowing design language with its uncompromising focus on quality, the new Meriva also includes the widest interior color and trim choice ever offered by Opel in a single model.

    2011 Opel Meriva

Innovative flexibility solutions ease entry and free up space

A new dimension in rear seat access is opened up by the Meriva’s rear-hinged FlexDoors, a first in the segment. The design optimizes the size of the door aperture by using the space which is occupied by the rear wheel-arch with a front-hinged door. By placing the rear door hinges on the C-pillar, entry and exit space is wider. It is also higher because entry access is adjacent to the B-pillar where there is more space between the roof and floor.

FlexDoors also improved ergonomics. Parents can stand in the space usually taken up by an open door, making it easy to help babies and toddlers with seat belts. Adults can simply step forward when getting in or out of the rear seat, without having to twist over a wheel-arch. The Meriva’s FlexDoors open up to almost 90 degrees, much wider than conventional doors, to assist in storing cargo.

Accessing the rear cabin is also easier in narrow car spaces. Importantly, when both the front and rear door are open at the same time, FlexDoors create a safety zone: Both child and parents can get out of the car without a door separating them; children are kept under control.

At the same time, the FlexDoors are safe. Opel engineers have developed a fail-safe system that ensures the doors are always latched and locked whenever the vehicle is in motion at speeds above four kilometers per hour. To ensure optimum performance and reliability, the sophisticated safety system warns drivers if a door is not completely closed.

Opel innovations provide storage for the little necessities and the big extras

Another innovative feature is the Meriva’s FlexRail center console concept. It provides convenient and adaptable storage for a wide range of everyday items – from handbags and magazines to iPods, CDs and tissue boxes. Extra space has been created between the front seats by raising the gearshift and fitting an electric park brake as a standard feature on all versions.

Improved storage opportunities extend throughout the cabin, which has been designed to accommodate the items that Opel research shows are most commonly carried inside a car. One example: A 1.5-liter bottle fits in the front door pockets.

In the rear, Meriva’s class-leading FlexSpace seating concept offers an adaptable cabin configuration without having to remove any seats. It has been improved for a more intuitive operation with an easy, one-step motion when sliding the rear seat cushions or lowering the seatbacks. This allows the Meriva to easily transform between five and two seats. Alternatively, all rear seatbacks can be fully lowered for optimal cargo-carrying flexibility.

New for Meriva is the FlexFix bicycle carrier. This Opel innovation slides in and out of the rear bumper like a drawer, making bicycle transportation easy and convenient as no special tools or fittings – or storage space in a garage – are required. The carrier can accommodate two bicycles and, when not in use, slides back invisibly into the Meriva’s rear bumper.

Comfortable seats are good for backs

The new seats offer support and generous proportions, bringing a level of comfort typical of those in larger vehicles. The range of adjustment for the front seats is also class-leading.
Ergonomic Sport seats, with tilting function, powered lumbar adjustment, 4-way adjustable headrests and an extendable seat cushion for front occupants, are introduced as an option for Enjoy and Cosmo variants. Those seats have received a seal of approval from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (Action for Healthy Backs) – an independent panel of ergonomics experts in Germany.

    2011 Opel Meriva

    Optimized visibility and safety

The new Meriva optimizes the high-riding benefits of a monocab by offering excellent visibility front and rear. The lowered front fascia, narrower realigned A-pillars and larger front quarter-lights all contribute to a command driving position. The unique wave design in the belt line increases the depth of the rear windows, improving the view from the rear seats, particularly for children.

New for the Meriva is the optional, full-length panorama sunroof. Almost two meters long and equipped with an electrically-powered blind, it is the largest offered in the small monocab segment and further adds to the airy feel of the cabin.

Driving safety can be enhanced by the Adaptive Forward Lighting system, which includes Dynamic Curve Light and Static Cornering Light.

    2011 Opel Meriva

Design quality evident at first glance

Inside and out, the new Meriva expresses Opel’s new design language – sculptural artistry meets German precision – and carries forward the quality already seen on Insignia and the new Astra. The lowered roof-line, Opel’s signature blade body side as well as the wing-shaped daytime driving lights give the new Meriva its fresh and distinctive identity.

On the inside, a warm and inviting cabin ambience is created by the wraparound wing-shaped instrument panel. The forward-leaning center stack contributes to this and adds a notion of sportiness. The interior includes six different levels of color and trim, ranging from traditional, contemporary elegance to more adventurous urban chic, offering the largest choice ever offered by Opel on a single model. The high standard of fit and finish of the chosen textures and materials as well as the layout and decoration of the controls is typical of more expensive cars.

Essentia is finished in Jet Black for the wing fascia motif and upholstery. Enjoy trim comes in Jet Black, Red Curry or Cocoa/light Cocoa for the wing and seat upholstery. The top-of-the-line Cosmo adds rich, embossed seat upholstery trimmed with black Morrocana and contrasting stitching. Two color combinations are offered: anthracite/black or Cocoa/ light grey.

Overall, the new Meriva delivers more expressive design and greater flexibility, reinforcing its leadership of Europe’s small monocab segment. The marriage of form and function has never looked this good.

2011 Opel Meriva AKA Vauxhall Meriva Unveiled

    • Unique-in-class FlexDoors offer unrivalled occupant access and convenience
    • FlexRail and FlexSpace features bring new levels of cabin versatility to class
    • Fuel consumption reduced by 15% vs current range; ecoFLEX version to be offered
Luton – These are the first official pictures of Vauxhall’s new Meriva, which is set to turn the conventional concept of family-car usability on its head with a combination of clever, rear-hinged back doors which radically improve access/egress, and a raft of unique cabin features that boost interior versatility.
The new Meriva, which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, is the first Vauxhall to feature FlexDoors, showcased in 2008’s Meriva design concept.
FlexDoors are rear-hinged back doors which swing open towards the back of the car at an angle of nearly 90 degrees, vastly improving the ease with which occupants enter and leave the cabin. Rather than having to step back, or to one side, as one would using a normal front-hinged door, the FlexDoor allows unimpeded forward access/egress to and from the cabin, enhanced further by the Meriva’s exceptionally high roof line.

For parents with children, there are further benefits. Due to the larger door opening and free space around the B-pillar, parents can lift small children forwards in to rear-mounted, second-stage child seats without having to contort themselves around a door. And with both the front and rear doors open (the fronts open at a similar angle to the rear FlexDoors) a ‘parent-friendly’ zone is created with no door barrier between front and rear occupants.
Crucially, the FlexDoors can only be opened by occupants while the car is stationary, an automatic lock engaging as soon as the car pulls away.
While the concept of two rear-hinged back doors is not new in the motor industry, the Meriva’s FlexDoor system is the first time it has been used on a family car in recent years. But unlike other rear-hinged door applications (Rolls Royce Phantom/Ghost and Mazda RX8), the Meriva benefits from front and rear doors that open independently, and does not require rear passengers to sit behind the door opening.

    Class-leading in-cabin flexibility
Once inside the new Meriva, buyers benefit from two further groundbreaking innovations. The FlexRail adopts a completely fresh approach to the design of a car’s centre console, and provides owners with a variety of modular storage and comfort solutions that fix on to an ingenious dual-rail base. The new Meriva’s storage bin and cubby count has also increased, meaning that owners now benefit from one of the most practical cabins in class.
In addition, the current Meriva’s much-praised FlexSpace system has evolved with even greater practicality. Now more intuitive to use, the new Meriva’s FlexSpace allows easier fold-down of the rear seats, while moving the rear seats to create more boot, leg or shoulder room is simpler than ever.
The new Meriva’s seat comfort has also advanced, with the adoption of front seat technology from the Insignia and Astra. Like these cars, the Meriva offers the biggest range of seat adjustment in class, extending to 240mm in length and 65mm in height.

New Meriva adopts design language from Insignia and new Astra
The current Meriva effectively created the compact monocab sector when it was launched in 2003, but since then Vauxhall’s design language has evolved steadily, with big strides being made with the European Car of the Year-winning Insignia and more recently with the launch of the all-new Astra.
No surprise, then, that the new Meriva has adopted a more expressive and dynamic silhouette to its basic cab-forward monocab design. Like the Insignia and Astra, a ‘blade’ features down the side of the body, complementing a window line with a distinct ‘wave’ accentuating the FlexDoors, allowing panoramic views for rear passengers.
The design theme continues in the Meriva’s cabin, with cues taken from the Insignia and Astra enhancing the perceived quality of the materials.

Advanced chassis and more efficient powertrains
With a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks, buyers will see a marked improvement in the new Meriva’s ride and handling qualities.
They’ll also see a reduction in running costs, since the engine line-up – which features six turbocharged units and power outputs from 75 to 140PS – benefits from an average fuel consumption/CO2 reduction of 15 per cent, or -25g/km across the range. A high mpg/low CO2 ecoFLEX model will also be available.
More information will be available closer to the Meriva’s debut at Geneva.

Vauxhall Insignia VXR Sports Tourer unveiled

    Vauxhall Insignia VXR Sports Tourer

No more spy shots. GM has formally unveiled the Vauxhall Insignia VXR Sports Tourer (a.k.a. the Opel Insignia OPC Sports Tourer on the other side of the Chunnel). By now, you're probably seen the specs, but we'll go over them again for the sake of being complete. 325 horses are corralled in the 2.8-liter turbo V6 underhood. Yep, that's a six-speed stick you see in the attached photo gallery, and both all-wheel drive and eLSD are standard. Stopping power is supplied by Brembo, the seats are by Recaro, and the overall appearance is liberally sprinkled with awesome. All told, the whole package is good for a zero-to-60 run in six seconds flat, which has us dreaming of this car, in this color, wearing the Buick Tri-Shield up front. Maybe Grand National badges on the fenders, too. Okay, it's more like a pipe dream, but let us have our fun.

    PRESS RELEASE:

NEW INSIGNIA VXR SPORTS TOURER PACKS POWER, POISE AND ALL YOUR PARAPHERNALIA

    * Fastest ever Vauxhall estate with 6-second 0-60 time
    * 1530-litre load capability combined with Adaptive 4x4 chassis and 325 horsepower
    * Third and final body style to be offered in Insignia VXR spec

Luton – With 10,000 kilometres of gruelling validation at the world's most fearsome and demanding test track now under their belt, the Vauxhall Insignia VXR hatch and saloon are set to raise the bar in their sector with a heady mix of high performance, practicality and sophisticated dynamics.

And now, adding even greater versatility to the range, Vauxhall can confirm that the Insignia VXR Sports Tourer will be the third body style to join the line up and will be available in UK dealerships this autumn, after enduring the same rigorous testing at the notorious Nürburgring Circuit.

Combining all the technical highlights of the VXR hatch and saloon with best in class-matching luggage capacity (rear seats up), the VXR Sports Tourer is not only the fastest estate car Vauxhall has ever produced, but also the first to incorporate Adaptive 4x4 and an electronic limited slip differential (eLSD).

Like its saloon and hatch siblings, the VXR Sports Tourer sits 10 millimetres lower than the regular Sports Tourer, and features the unique HiPerStrut system, which reduces torque-steer and maintains negative camber during cornering, thereby improving wet and dry grip levels.

Complementing these features are standard 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch lightweight forged alloys are a cost option) with bespoke tyres, revised bushing and damper settings on both axles, and Brembo brakes with colour-keyed callipers and vented/cross-drilled discs.

And with 325PS, the Brembos are a must. Using a modified version of the 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 engine that's standard in the Insignia Elite model, the Sports Tourer VXR will hit 60mph from zero in 6.0 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph.

Inside, the Sports Tourer's performance credentials are laid bare, with its front Recaro seats, VXR steering wheel and gearknob, as well as different instrument graphics, VXR sill plates and black headlining.

But where the VXR Sports Tourer really scores is in its versatility. With 540-litres of load space with the 40:60 split rear seats up, the SportsTourer matches the best in class. Drop the 40:60 split rear seats and you have a maximum load volume of 1530-litres.

Accessing this area has never been easier, thanks to the Sports Tourer VXR's standard electronic tailgate, which can be operated off the driver's key fob, or via a rotary knob on the inside of the driver's door. Using these functions, not only can the opening height of the tailgate be restricted, but it can also be pre-set at a lower level if you frequently park in a garage with a low ceiling.

Deeper bumpers, front mesh grilles and dual matt chrome exhausts are among the Sports Tourer VXR's visual armoury, complemented by a colour palette comprising Arden Blue, Power Red, Carbon Flash Black (pictured), Silver Lake, Olympic White and Technical Grey.

'The Insignia VXR Sports Tourer will be a compelling alternative for buyers in the premium sector who may currently be considering an Audi S4 Avant or BMW 335i M Sport Touring,' said Andy Gilson, Vauxhall's Marketing Director. 'We've already seen a swing to the Insignia from premium buyers who'd never before ticked the Vauxhall box on their wish list, and we expect to see the same buying pattern emerge with all versions of the Insignia VXR.'

Prices for the Insignia VXR range will be announced early summer.Source URL: https://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/search/label/Vauxhall
