Pininfarina family stake to be sold - Tata potential suitor

Pininfarina Blue Car EV production version

Pincar, the company owned by the Pininfarina family may sell its majority stake in troubled design house and coachbuilder Pininfarina. Through Pincar the family holds a majority stake of 50.7%. Selling the piece is a decision taken at a board meeting last week and was part of a debt agreement made with the banks in 2008. The end result would be that Pincar would no longer be the majority owner but at the same time the family would not leave the business completely.

A number of well-known industry names have been touted as possible new partners. One of them is Tata which owns the Tata Motors, Jaguar and Land Rover brands. The Indian company has an existing alliance with Fiat and was mentioned as an investor last year. Being closely related to Pininfarina, a company that has designed some of the most striking Ferraris and Maseratis in the past would certainly give Tata a boost in its design department.

Another possible partner is said to be Bolloré, the French industrial company. Pininfarina is working with them to develop an electric car dubbed, Bluecar. In 2008 founder Vincent Bolloré expressed an interest in becoming one of the shareholders at Pininfarina.

Could Ford also be in the mix? The Italian brand builds the Focus Coupe Cabriolet for the blue oval while another agreement sees it producing the Volvo C70 at a plant in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Pininfarina Family Hires Bank To Sell 50.7% Stake In Design Firm

Reportedly, the family owners of Pininfarina have already engaged the services of an Italian bank to sell their 50.7% stake held by Pincar, the Pininfarina family's company. The news highlights the difficulty that luxury coachbuilders are facing from the financial crisis and the resulting drop in demand for their services and products, a situation that has had rival Italian coachbuilder Bertone on the back foot for some time now.

It seems Pininfarina's best chances for survival would come from having a group of investors, rather than a single controlling company, considering that if a large enough stake in Pininfarina was acquired by a rival company some of its contracts with auto manufacturers could be put at risk.

Despite seeking to sell off their majority stake in the company, an anonymous source within the Pininfarina company revealed to Reuters that the family had "no intention of leaving completely", and the sale was a measure taken to comply with previously agreed upon debt stipulations with banks last year.

With over half the company expected to go up for sale, speculation is rife as to who could step in to purchase Pininfarina. Last year we reported that Piero Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari's second son, Alberto Bombassei, chairman of Brembo, and the Marsiaj family, founders of the Sabelt seatbelt company have all considered investing in Pininfarina, along with Vincent Bollore, a French financier, and Ratan Tata, head of India's Tata conglomerate, who already announced its plans to invest.

The Golden Ferrari! Pininfarina

The New Pininfarina project dubbed the "Golden Ferrari". Apparently based on the 599 GTB, the car seems to have received inspiration from the Ferrari 330 LMB featured in the short film "Toby Dammit".

He made for us the following photos of a special new Ferrari, which was not yet running. On the plate is "The Golden Ferrari" in reading, the Pininfarina logo below. The whole suggests that this is a piece of coach building is, according to insiders, a one-off. We wrote earlier that Ferrari is the coach building to new life would blow. They would also cooperate with partners such as Fioravanti (check), Zagato, Touring Superleggera, and of course Pininfarina.

The front is very similar to a 599, but towards the back forming the lines into something very different. The back is even very retro, in which the design appears almost equal to the golden Ferrari (the golden car) from the short film Toby Dammit, part of Spirits of the Dead. This Ferrari was based on a 330LMB (with 4-liter V12) and was using Fiorenzo Fantuzzi a new body. Pininfarina has apparently want to make a remake of this classic. Check the gallery for more pictures!

benzs-Pininfarina Rolls-Royce Hyperion Officially Revealed

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe owned by Hall provides the base for the Hyperion, the rear seats of the model are removed leaving enough area to nudge the driving position back an extra 400mm.To accurately depict the styling of the pre-war cars, Pininfarina had to extend the roof which simultaneously shorten the rear end whilst keeping a beautiful array of soft flowing design lines.

The classic Rolls-Royce grille remains although it is now slightly inclined offering better aerodynamic performance and a set of recessed Bixenon headlights with LED technology lie both sides of it. Most of the bodywork is made of carbon fibre, although the doors which have been designed by craftsmen that usually focus on luxury boats are made of solid wood.

Much of the Drophead Coupe's interior styling remains, however a vintage 1945 watch specially designed for the Hyperion by Girard-Perregaux can be found attached to the dashboard, it can also be detached for Mr. Hall's personal use.

Mechanics beneath the Hyperion's elegant posterior have been left untouched

Pininfarina were challenged and commissioned by car collector Roland Hall to create a vehicle that would pay homage to the sumptuous cars of the 1930s, a challenge that is well within the grasp of the Italians specialists. Pininfarina have used their expertise to create special models in the past, some may remember the Ferrari P4/5 based on the Enzo or perhaps even the Scaglietti “K” springs to mind.

Pininfarina Sintesi official info, new pic

Pininfarina cant wait to wow us all at Geneva with this concept vehicle called the Sintesi. What Sintesi stands for as a concept is freedom of expression, freedom of movement inside a car, and freedom of the car itself within the context of exterior design.

Born of the idea that the shape of a cover is not a cover for the mechanicals, but rather the car gives shape to the mechanicals around the passengers, Sintesi follows a philosophy called Liquid Packaging. You can picture it in your mind what types of images follow anything shaped around liquidity of form.

Pininfarina says this is not only the future shape to come of their famous firm, but also to inspire the very future of motor design.

Interesting technologies embody what Sintesi is all about, like the lighting system that is said to disseminate information cleverly around the passengers in order not only to enhance the driving experience but also safety. The Pininfarina Sintesi runs on fuel cells which are positioned closest to the four wheels in order to optimise spatial utilisation.

    Press Release

Three years after the Birdcage 75th, Pininfarina returns with the Sintesi, a new concept car that explores ideas and solutions for the car of the future.
“The Sintesi is not only a testament to the creativeness of our design team,” declared Andrea Pininfarina, Chairman and Managing Director of the Group, “but it reiterates our historical ability to anticipate stylistic and technological solutions that we will see in the cars of the future.”
Before being unveiled at Geneva, the Sintesi has been the subject of a teaser campaign (www.sintesi.pininfarina.com) which has attracted a great deal of interest online among specialist journalists, scoring more than 250,000 hits on Google.

The Sintesi is a sports car with four doors and four seats, developed by a highly innovative approach: it does not consider the car as a shape that covers the mechanicals, but one that gives a shape to the mechanicals around the passengers, starting from the latter. This approach, which is known as “Liquid” Packaging, has overturned traditional volumetric balances, improving weight distribution and lowering the centre of gravity, which are important elements for driving dynamics.
This was made possible by close collaboration with Nuvera, which developed the Quadrivium Fuel Cells system, the various components of which were distributed around the car, with four fuel cells positioned near to the wheels. The result is that the space for passengers is much more generous – in proportion to the total volume of the car – without detracting from the sporty line with its relaxed, elegant profile which is sleek, tapered and aerodynamic (Cd = 0.27). The modular nature of the fuel cells, combined with the batteries and a sophisticated overall electronic architecture (developed with PI Shurlok), allows for modular use of the available power depending on driving conditions.

“Our source of inspiration,” said Lowie Vermeersch, Pininfarina Design Manager, “was man’s freedom over technology, a car in which technology gives creative freedom back to the designer and allows us to explore new forms and future scenarios. But at the same time, we did not want everything to be limited to a flight of fancy, we wanted our approach to be very concrete. Which is why we combined and tested our ideas with the innovative technologies provided by our partners in this project.”
The Sintesi was imagined in a setting of Transparent Mobility which, thanks to Clancast®, the radio technology developed by Reicom after years of research, envisages that all cars act as nerve cells, creating a dynamic communications network managed by a disseminated intelligence. A real “living connective tissue” on which data and information about traffic and security, audio and video, Internet and cross-media content can travel. A concept of wireless connectivity that establishes a continuous, transparent dialogue between the town, the road and the vehicles that we will drive in the future, without limiting the motorist’s autonomy, but increasing his sense of freedom.

This futuristic scenario, based on concrete, existing technology, opens the door to advanced active safety solutions which in turn have made it possible to design the car with volumes that are not conditioned by today’s bulky passive safety systems.
The important role played by electronics in the Sintesi project is also evident in the design of the interior and the lights. Inside, the facia symbolises the flow of information in which the car moves. Created as a single semi-transparent piece by Materialise, using the additive technology of personalised manufacturing, its shape disseminates the information around the passenger compartment thanks to the intuitive use of colour and light.
The lights become focal points through which the car dialogues with its environment. In addition to the innovative LED system supplied by Osram, which made it possible to create a simple, strong shape that underlines the car’s central axis, the ‘headlights’ also incorporate the telecameras and the proximity radar system.
In Geneva other cars will make their debut on our clients’ stands.

The Ford stand hosts the debut of the new Ford Focus CoupĂ©-Cabriolet, which is manufactured in the Pininfarina plant in Bairo, where the “job one” was celebrated on February 21. Like the other models of the Focus family, the new CoupĂ©-Cabriolet, which will be launched this Spring, has a more gutsy, sporty look both inside and outside.

The Granturismo S has its world première on the Maserati stand, a sporty, high performance version of the Granturismo designed by Pininfarina, which won the “Best in Show” award at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.
The Model Year 2008 of the Alfa Spider debuts on the Alfa Romeo stand. The model was developed jointly by Pininfarina and the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, and it includes significant improvements in the interior, guaranteeing an even higher level of comfort and well-being on board. The 2008 version of the Alfa Brera also makes its appearance; like the Spider, it is built in the Pininfarina plant in San Giorgio Canavese.

“This edition of the Geneva Motor Show – said Andrea Pininfarina - also represents a moment of joy and pride for the induction of my father, Sergio Pininfarina - our Honorary Chairman - into the European Automotive Hall of Fame, marking high points in the history of our company.”

Latest On The Pininfarina Sintesi Concept

It seems quite clear that one of the focal points of the upcoming Pininfarina Sintesi concept car has to do with a society where vehicles talk to each other to potentially eliminate traffic and accidents. This information is insinuated in the latest edition of the Sintesi Magazine, released on the Pininfarina concept's website.

This new issue, also subtitled "Transparent Mobility", places the Sintesi as a vehicle that "communicates and interacts continually with other elements." In doing so, the apparently adjustable auto-pilot tells the vehicle to speed up and slow down, pending road conditions and vehicle movement. In one illustrated scenario, the Sintesi is approaching an intersection at the same time as several other cars. But with no stoplights, it takes the Sintesi's artificial intelligence to determine the speed and trajectory to navigate through the crossroads as efficiently as possible.

Should the Sintesi have a viable system, called ClanCast, traffic lights and road signs would become obsolete. Signals would be sent to the driver and displayed in the car on the completely decentralized data network.

Automobile Auto-Pilot is not a new idea, and frequently pops up in science fiction (I, Robot, anyone?). It will be very interesting to see a fresh perspective on this idea. The Pininfarina Sintesi will debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Final Pininfarina Sintesi Teaser

As promised, Pininfarina have been trickling information through regarding its new Sintesi concept car as the weeks go by in the lead up to next week's Geneva Motor Show 2008.

Pininfarina have long had a history of producing some of the most beautiful production cars and also some of the most outlandish concept cars. Sintesi means synthesis in Italian. Pininfarina describes the Sintesi as a "synthesis of beauty, sportiness and functionality,". The Sintesi is the latest concept car from Pininfarina since the oddly named Birdcage 75th which was presented some 3 years ago also in Geneva.

Previously the chairman, Andrea Pininfarina, gave an indication of what Pininfarina want to get out of this concept; “Three years ago we unveiled Birdcage 75th, our last prototype. Together with our new concept Sintesi we would like to anticipate new car design trends. In Sintesi, we put all our goodwill in looking at the future, first and foremost in resorting to the excellence of our design.”

Powered by an advanced fuel cell powerplant, the Sintesi is said to have around 700hp at its disposal and can seat four people in comfort. This design is sure to be a crowd puller at this years Geneva show.

Pininfarina Sintesi Concept first sketch revealed

Pininfarina has released the first sketch of the new Sintesi, its first concept car since the Birdcage 75th, presented in the 2005 edition of the Geneva Motor Show. Due to be first shown to the public in March, also at the Geneva event, the Sintesi has been given a website of its own, www.sintesi.pininfarina.com , only to tease visitors about what the Italian “azienda” has prepared this time. Most of the images in the photo album have been taken from it.

The Sintesi, as its name states, intends to be a synthesis of the sportiness that has always emerged from Pininfarina’s projects and the functionality another of its famous concept cars, the Nido, has demonstrated so well. These ideas would perfectly fit the new electric car Pininfarina will release in 2010, in a partnership with the French company Bollore. Most people would think the logical choice would be the Nido, since the own company relates the new product to its city cars. The current conception of what an electric car should be also points to small vehicles, but the Nido is a two-seater and Pininfarina has already informed the electric car will be a four-seater, just like the Sintesi will be…

The low-volume production, only 15,000 cars a year, also points out that Pininfarina’s electric vehicle will be more willing to face the Fisker Karma than a smart fortwo.

Sintesi is also the first concept created under the direction of Lowie Vermeersch. Check out what he says about the car: “This concept car is the synthesis of our values, of the love for our work and our passion for innovation, of beauty driven by functionality, of sportiness and elegance. However, Sintesi isn’t only the expression of Pininfarina design; it also embraces innovative technologies that allow us to explore new typologies of mobility, active safety and packaging solutions.” Any doubts it is a serious candidate to become a production electric car?

The chairman Andrea Pininfarina endorses this idea. “Three years ago we unveiled Birdcage 75th, our last prototype. Together with our new concept Sintesi we would like to anticipate new car design trends. In Sintesi, we put all our goodwill in looking at the future, first and foremost in resorting to the excellence of our design.” Let’s way and see!

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti K by Pininfarina

    Pininfarina penned a unique Ferrari

Following on the success scored at its world debut at the last Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance, the fantastic Ferrari 612 Scaglietti "K" by Pininfarina built for Peter S. Kalikow has finally been unveiled before the American public.

The customer specifically asked Pininfarina to design, engineer and produce a special version of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti able to accentuate the lines of the vehicle, developing this according to a styling process able to highlight its elegance and exclusive nature.

Kalikow's initial brief was very simple and clear: a vehicle with a new body with such subtle, hidden differences from the original as to be recognizable at first glance by only 10% of Ferrari connoisseurs. A brief that was gradually developed and refined so as to construct a vehicle tailored to the requirements of the customer who personally followed up development of the styling, selecting product contents and participating in choosing the materials and colours.

The vehicle that has been designed is a real "one-off" job which, at the same time, offers the owner everything he considers essential, comfortable and important in daily use.

An elegant but frills-free car reflecting Pininfarina's unequalled style and tradition. Major contents include: the front grille, reminiscent of those of vehicles designed in the Fifties and Sixties; the liquid crystal and photovoltaic cell transparent roof (Isoclima technology); the large air outlet on the front bumper that stems from the volumes of the side; the fins that wrap round the rear window as in the company's most beautiful designs; the rear lighting clusters that recall the Enzo.

The interior has been modified as desired by customer so as to incorporate all those minor amenities that make the driver feel he is immersed in an environment designed and constructed exclusively for him right down to the smallest details.

"We are particularly proud - comments Paolo Garella, Head of the Special Projects Division - that we have succeeded perfectly in interpreting the demands of a great collector".

"His compliments and evident satisfaction - concluded Andrea Pininfarina, Chairman and CEO Pininfarina Group - are the best reward for our entire team who participated in the project".

Three questions for Peter S. Kalikow

Why Pininfarina for your special car?

For as long as I can remember, Pininfarina has been designing coach work for Ferrari. The part of this business that always intrigued me was the special one off models done for auto-shows and special customers. As a Ferrari fan for 48 years, and a customer for 39 years, I was thrilled to have the opportunity of being one of those people to have a special Ferrari designed and constructed by Pininfarina.

Could you explain your personal involvement during the main phases of the Project?

When I received my first 612 my opinion was that this was one of the finest, if not "the finest" road car ever constructed by Ferrari. The more I drove it the more I was drawn to this conclusion. There were some details in the style, however, that I thought could be slightly improved upon. I was able to discuss this with Pininfarina, which was wonderful at carrying out my wishes. I made a few trips to Cambiano, but mainly we dealt through e-mail. It was kind of nice knowing that Pininfarina cared about my wishes enough to constantly seek my input was very gratifying.

Do you recommend Pininfarina to another enthusiast of the cars like you?

I would say that Pininfarina's Special Projects Division, which handled the construction of my 612, was populated by some of the finest automotive engineers, stylists and technicians that I have ever come across. Everything was done in a first class manner, with detailed drawings that left no doubt that my wishes would be transformed to aluminum glass and leather. Anyone that wants to enjoy the fullest extent of Ferrari ownership could do no better than having Pininfarina construct a special car for them.

    Peter S. Kalikow

President of HJ Kalikow & Co., a leading real estate company, and Chairman of MTA of New York. Former Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and owner and publisher of the New York Post. Married with Mary, he has two children: Nicholas and Kathryn. Several awards honoured his humanitarian activity.
