De Tomaso Pantera revival could be based on the Gallardo

    De Tomaso Pantera

We've heard rumblings of a De Tomaso Pantera revival for the last year or so, and now reports are appearing that suggest that the new car, if it ever sees the light of day at all, may not be the same Ford-powered mid-engined supercar that we've come to know and love. We could deal with the idea that the name might have to be changed to Panthera instead of Pantera, but basing the once Ford-powered classic on Lamborghini architecture as our source suggests would surely price the vehicle far out of reach for most of us. The Lamborghini Gallardo and the Audi R8 share similar underpinnings already, and these new rumors suggest that the Pantera re-dux would be based on the same platform and also pilfer the German-Italian V10 engine, which makes us wonder if the market is willing to accept three similar super cars, all with similar running gear and similar performance.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

2010 Acura NSX

    2010 Acura NSX

Honda is testing for a long time now the NSX supercar; and even if it won’t be unveiled until 2010, Best Magazine gave us a pretty good idea of how the supercar will look like.

The NSX will be sold under the Acura badge, and will be powered by a 4.5 liter V10 engine that will deliver 550 hp. The AWD super will make the Nürburgring in just 7minutes and 30 seconds: better than the Porsche Carrera GT. The Japanese magazine expects the car to be priced between 12,500,000 and 15,000,000 yen (that’s $125.000-$150.000).Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Geely CE Concept

    Geely CE

Via Autoblog Chinese, the parade of Beijing-bound debuts continues. Today we've got another one from Geely, which seems to be working to establish itself as a style leader in a sea of Chinese cars, the looks of which range from the vanilla to the bizarre. The renderings you see here show the Geely CE concept, a compact 5-door hatch that easily has the looks to appeal to shoppers outside of Geely's home market. If Geeley is able to bring this car to production and make it safe enough to meet Western crash test standards (something we have yet to see on anything remotely resembling a consistent basis from the Chinese manufacturers), it is going to make a lot of noise, particularly in Europe where a low-priced, stylish, compact hatch like this would sell like french fries at McDonalds. From what we've seen so far, Geely's 18-car Beijing parade is setting itself up to be a stylistic quantum leap over some of its ridiculous past concepts and mundane current offeringsSource URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Bugatti Veyron - production increased

    Bugatti production

Bugatti has decided to increase production of its €1 million-plus Veyron supercar. This way, the company will build 90 units instead of 85 this year, an executive at parent company Volkswagen group said.

To increase production, Bugatti could shorten the summer break at its plant in Molsheim, France, to one week from three, the executive said.

Bugatti has 220 customer orders for the Veyron. It has delivered 135 cars so far. The company has not said what it plans to do after it completes its 300-unit run of the supercar.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Audi R4 denied

    Audi R4

For almost a year, we've been hearing rumors from a variety of sources that Audi planned to build a mid-engine sports car that would utilize the Porsche Boxster's underpinnings after the Stuttgart crew takes a majority stake in Audi's parent company, Volkswagen. By most accounts, including a leaked product outline, the so-called Audi R4 was on its way to production by 2010. But according to Automotive News, the plans have been dashed due to Porsche executives who worry that the R4 could steal sales away from their beloved Boxster.

AN quotes an Audi spokesperson as saying that, "It was never in our product planning." While some industry insiders maintain that it's best to keep the VW/Porsche alliance separate, Nick Margetts, from the automotive analysis firm JATO Dynamics, maintains that the R4 never would have threatened Boxster sales. Margetts says that, "Audi drivers are very different from Porsche drivers," and we tend to agree.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

FIA chief Max Mosley embroiled in S&M sex scandal

    Max Mosley
he world of motorsports was shocked by a report of a video tape which surfaced, allegedly showing FIA president Max Mosley participating in a bizarre sadomasochistic orgy. The reports emanate from British tabloid News of the World, but have been spreading rapidly across mainstream media and the motoring press.

The video reportedly depicts Mosley engaging the services of five prostitutes in London to stage a perverse reenactment of a Nazi concentration camp in which Mosley plays both victim and oppressor, alternately receiving lashes from a dominatrix and barking orders in German to the prostitutes dressed in pseudo-Auschwitz uniforms. The son of infamous wartime British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, who married Max's mother Diana in the presence of Adolf Hitler at a ceremony in the home of Nazi arch-propagandist Joseph Goebbels, Mosley had tried to help resuscitate his father's fascist political career before leaving politics for the world of motor racing. Meanwhile Mosley's closest allies include former Ferrari chief Jean Todt (the son of a Holocaust survivor) and Jewish business mogul Bernie Ecclestone, who has publicly come to Mosley's defense. Mosley is reportedly considering pursuing legal action against News of the World, while sources suggest the World Council of the FIA may be preparing a vote of no confidence in Mosley's leadership. In the meantime it's business as usual for Mosley, who is heading to Bahrain to preside over the grand prix there next weekend. (Thanks to David who brought this story to our attention.)

Barnum was Right: Pair of Mustangs Go for 300K at Barrett-Jackson

    The new KITT

It was P. T. Barnu who built a fortune on the proposition that “[t]here’s a sucker born every minute.

A man whose mother apparently gave birth as the minute hand reached twelve paid $300,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach for a pair of “KITTt” Mustangs.

KITT, in case you’ve missed it, is the car that was the soul of the television show “Knight Rider,” long ago. The real KITT was a Pontiac. Though they’ve been offered on eBay, the real KITT cars have, so far, gone unsold at their asking prices, which have been less than was paid for the imitations.

But, the movie industry lacks for original ideas. So, the scions of imagination are bringing back the TV show as a film. This time Ford got the nod for the car job. (Apparently, they heard in Dearborn that GM had gotten the deal for “Transformers,” and thereby had secured its future in the marketplace.)

Now, it may have escaped you, but Ford has been doing a lot of special edition Mustangs. Roush may have reached the outer limits with the P-51 Mustang commemorative edition, but Roush has also been responsible for one done in Gulf racing colors and he’s probably going to do one in pink. Ford, at least, managed to avoid competing with Mary Kay when it did the breast cancer Mustang. That one was black, with a pink stripe South of the skeg line.

The demise of a car is generally preceded by myriad special editions. When it ain’t selling, putting a tape and trim package on it, a few more dollars on the sticker and then discounting the dickens out of it to the dealer is the solution.

And that’s exactly what Ford’s doing with the Mustang.

But, $300 grand for two clones of a car that’s really nothing more than an overdone Roush Mustang with a rear wing from a WWI Spad?

    Barnum was right.

But wait – they sold because Jack Roush also sold his hat as part of the deal.

Wonder if Jack appreciates the irony:

His hat is worth more than his cars.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Prius fighter: Honda reveals details about new global hybrid

    Prius fighter

Honda's upcoming dedicated hybrid model is expected to debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, and a recent interview with Honda CEO Takeo Fukui revealed that the car will look similar to its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity. Although many upcoming hybrid models use lithium ion batteries (including the Chevy Volt and Honda's own FCX), Honda plans to stick with the tried-and-true nickel metal hydride technology for its new machine along with an engine derived from the Civic's, though smaller, lighter and with newly programmed electronics. Also like the Civic and Accord, the new hybrid model will use the same nameplate the world over; what that nameplate will be remains a mystery. Insight, anyone?

Expected to be priced below the Civic Hybrid, Honda hopes to sell 200,000 of its new hybrid model per year. We expect that the new machine will start an epic battle between Honda and Toyota for supremacy in the entry-level hybrid market, much as they already duke it out in the midsize sedan range with the Accord and Camry. Consumers only stand to benefit from the competition, so we look forward to more information as it becomes available.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Motor Trend claims Nissan GT-R making at least 507 HP

    Nissan gtr

For car buffs it's baffling (and pretty cool, too) to see a $70,000 Nissan weighing nearly 4,000 lbs whoop up on lighter, more powerful cars. The GT-R lapped more than five seconds quicker than a Corvette Z06 and 911 Turbo at Buttonwillow Raceway during Road and Track's test, and Car and Driver pulled off some pretty incredible numbers during theirs, running 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and the quarter mile in just 11.5 seconds. However, some have questioned the numbers. How does the GT-R, which has a weight-to-horsepower ratio 25% higher than the Turbo and Z06, beat both around the racetrack?

Motor Trend questioned the numbers too, and decided to check for themselves when they received a GT-R to review. They took the GT-R over to K&N Engineering in San Bernardino, CA, who strapped it to their in-house chassis dyno to see just how much horsepower the car was making. Three separate runs in fourth gear netted an average of about 430 horsepower at the wheels. Assuming a conservative 15% drivetrain loss, the GT-R is actually producing more than 500 horsepower and 500 lb-ft torque at the flywheel. That helps explain the numbers, but it won't give 911 Turbo and Corvette Z06 owners any comfort. Thanks for the tip, Jake!Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Voisin Concept

    Voisin Concept

Unless you've got your automotive history books close at hand (or a Wikipedia bookmark), the name Avions Voisin won't spring to mind. The French bespoke automaker was established in 1919 and rivaled the likes of Bentley and Bugatti up until it's demise in 1939. Now, the Portuguese designer and founder of LusoMotors, Ernest Freitas, has decided to revive the deceased marque with the introduction of the Voison supercar concept.

    Voisin Concept

Currently, it only lives in the CAD realm, but Freitas intends to build a full-scale model in the future to display at auto shows to gauge interest and public opinion. The technical details are scarce, but it's obvious that the concept is taking aim at the Bugatti Veyron, reviving the former rivalry, with power conceivably provided by a variant of Audi's V12 diesel engine.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Audi R8 Spider

    Audi R8 Spider

The open-top version of the Audi R8 sportscar will be launched next year. It will be offered with a choice of two petrols and a V12 diesel engine, and will be serious competition for Porsche 911. If the R8 Coupe is priced at £78,200, the Spider will cost nearer £85,000.

According to CarMagazine, the roof of the Spider will be a removable targa affair, with detachable panels rather than a canvas hood or folding hard top.

The first choice for the R8 Spider will be the same V8 enginedelivering 414 hp as in the Coupe version. But Audi is also working on a V10 engine (Lambo-based) that will deliver 500 hp. The V12 diesel engine will also join the line-up.

So, the R8 will be offered with three different engines: R8: 414bhp naturally aspirated V8, RS8: 500bhp naturally aspirated V10, R8 TDI: 500bhp twin-turbo V12 turbodiesel and two bodystyles: R8 Coupe from £78,200 and R8 Spyder from £85,000.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Hamilton will get $4m McLaren F1 LM for winning title

He will see his dream come true if he wins the 2008 title, and McLaren is crowned constructors’ champion. "Fortunately, our deal gives me a bit of time to save up!" Dennis joked.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera production ended

The king is dead; long live the king. With barely a whimper, the short-lived and short-geared Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera has slipped quietly into the night. Its truncated production run yielded just 172 examples – 10 in white, 34 in gray, 37 in black, 45 in yellow and 46 in orange (each of whose owners thought they were being original) – ensuring that the Superleggera will become a collector's item years from now. The departure of the Superleggera comes hot on the heels of the introduction of the new LP560-4 and makes room for a new stripped out Gallardo.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Mercedes planning 1-series rival in 2011

    Mercedes A Class
It's no secret that the Mercedes-Benz A-class hasn't been a resounding success and that the automaker is looking to revamp its entry-level line-up to better compete with rivals. According to Autocar, M-B boss Dieter "Dr. Z" Zetsche has green-lighted a new model that's taking aim at the BMW 1-series and Audi A3, and will accompany the rest of the revised A-class models when it debuts in 2011.

The new model will replace the aging, if just recently facelifted, CLC and will initially come to market sporting a coupe body style instead of a three-door hatch. Mercedes plans to expand the rest of the A-classes to include at least three different body styles of each model, coinciding with the launch of the new B-class, which will be designed to compete with the upcoming BMW X1.

Power will supposedly come from a combination of direct-injection gasoline and diesel powerplants, with output ranging from 120 to 200 hp. Pricing should be competitive with BMW's 1-series models, with the new A-class falling right around the £19,000 mark.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Maruti Suzuki unveils ironically named Swift DZire sedan

    Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

It's a shame that more of Suzuki's line-up isn't as well designed and executed as the nimble little Swift hatchback. But we swear, this was not what we had in mind.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country's largest automaker and majority owned its the Japanese parent company, has taken the wraps off of the ironically named Swift DZire today, initial spy shots of which we lamented several months ago. Rather contrary to its name, we're left wondering what's so desirable about a trunk that it's worth butchering erstwhile attractive hatchbacks. The resulting conversion ends up looking like the hatch version, only with a tumor growing out the back. Maruti calls its "The Heart Car", but we'll go for the bypass, thank you very much.

    PRESS RELEASE:

Swift DZire set to create excitement in entry sedan segment

New Delhi, March 26, 2008: Car market leader Maruti Suzuki today unveiled the much awaited Swift DZire.

Like the earlier Maruti Suzuki models, Swift and SX4, the DZire too is set to redefine the market and stir excitement in the entry level sedan segment. The DZire, which comes both in diesel and petrol engines, offers luxury feature options like integrated stereo, steering mounted audio controls, automatic climate control and power windows. It also comes with safety features like Dual Airbags, ABS with EDB, collapsible steering column and an i-CATS anti-theft facility. Many of these features are being offered for the first time in this segment.

    Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki, S Nakanishi said: "The DZire is the seventh model Maruti Suzuki has launched in the last three years. It has a special place in our product strategy. Millions of Indians own compact cars. With growing incomes and better lifestyle, many of them want to upgrade to a sedan. But today, they are not able to find an entry level sedan that offers style, features and performance. The DZire offers all this, and at an attractive price."

    Performance with Prestige
DZire offers customers the prestige associated with a sedan, while retaining the famed performance of the Swift hatch back. The Swift had, from the start, been conceived as a car that would be offered both as a hatchback as well as a sedan.

For the eleven Maruti Suzuki engineers who worked on the design of the DZire, the challenge was to integrate the boot into the overall personality of the Swift, while imparting the elegance of a sedan. In providing a high style quotient, the engineers have integrated the boot with just 30 Kilograms added to the car's weight ! The suspension and engine have been tuned for the sedan.Owing to this, the DZire has the highest power-to-weight ratio in its category. This ensures best performance and superior fuel efficiency.

The petrol version of DZire comes with a 1.3 litre, 16 valve, ALTec 32 engine, with a maximum 87 bhp at 6000 rpm. The diesel version comes with the 1.3 litre DDiS engine, offering a torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm.

DZire is offered in seven colours: Arctic White, Silky Silver, Clear Beige, Midnight Black, Bright Red, Azure Gray and Sovereign Blue.

Best of both worlds - more features, attractive price
In recent years, Maruti Suzuki has consistently delivered more features than competitor cars, at prices that are comparable or lower. This has been the reason for the resounding success of Swift (Petrol as well as Diesel), Zen Estilo and SX4.

With the DZire, Maruti Suzuki will take the story forward. Commonising platforms is emerging as a global best practice. This enables manufacturers to minimise duplication and prevent wastage. They are able to offer more features and superior styling in car models, at an attractive price.

    Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

The DZire is the latest example. By commonising platforms, Maruti Suzuki is able to offer more features and superior styling, while keeping the price attractive.Maruti Suzuki designers and engineers have worked to control the noise, vibration and harshness levels, thus ensuring the best in class driving pleasure and comfort.

    A3 segment's new leader - Maruti Suzuki
While continuing to lead India's small car market, Maruti Suzuki has emerged as the market leader in the A3 segment as well during 2007-08. The company has sold a total of 41800 units in the last 11 months (Apr-Feb 2008) in the domestic market. This is the highest number of cars for any manufacturer in the A3 segment, according to the recent industry results published by SIAM.

    Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

The popularity of Maruti Suzuki cars in A3 segment also suggests that it has successfully expanded its image from being the leader in small cars to a company offering the full range of cars. With the launch of DZire in the A3 segment, the company is set to widen choice for the customer and further increase its lead over the competition.

2010 Jaguar SUV

    Jaguar SUV

Is not the first time you hear about a future SUV coming from Jaguar, we know that. And now that Tata is the new owner of Jaguar, they have confirmed that a crossover-SUV is under consideration. Having this statement, we took the liberty to get wild, and here’s how we think the future SUV will look like.

Long time ago, about two years ago, Jaguar boss Joe Greenwell said: "Are we looking at it? Yes. But we’re not about to launch it." So this means the car will not be launched before 2010. We also have to consider that the priorities are: a facelift XJ sedan, F-Type and XF Coupe. And only after this three we will see a SUV coming from Jaguar.

The future SUV will come as a direct competition for the newly launched BMW X6.

Even if there are no informations about the SUV’s specifications, we presume the output will be somewhere between 300 hp for a base version, and will go up to 400 hp for the top of the line. It will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in about 5.5 seconds, while the top speed will be around 155 mph.

People said Jaguar will not build a SUV because it will interfere with Land Rover’s customers. But the two companies have two different targets: the Jaguar is more for the one looking for the luxury, while Land Rover is for the sporty ones. And now, with Jaguar getting a new owner we have more reasons to really believe there will be a SUV in the future. So, stay tuned!Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Aston Martin V8 GT Concept

    V8 GT Concept

The Aston Martin V8 GT Concept was designed by Adam Gompertz. The sketch development concentrated on keeping certain elements of the V8 Vantage, namely the side strake that run through the bodyside, and the rear bumper surface. Yet at the same time, there was a real desire to create a new identity, with harder edges, and more muscular forms. The V8 GT Concept is inspired by old models from Aston Martin, such as the DB3S and the DB4 GT Zagato.

Major inspiration for this project came from the DB3S. The sharp creates lines on the top of the wings lend that car a feeling that underneath the muscular bodywork, are tendons stretching over the wheels.

The DB3S also serves as pointer to the philosophy of this concept. A sportscar with a clear purpose: to enhance the racing tradition of Aston Martin. A lighter, faster, more focused and bespoke Aston Martin.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Abt Sportsline Announce Reworked Golf R32

German tuner Abt Sportsline have gone to town on Volkswagen's fastest Golf model. The Abt R32 is the ultimate expression in performance for the everyday. Compact Golf dimensions and the R32's renowned sporting setup, the model is an 'ideal basis' for the tuner. "Whoever wants such a Golf wants an extremely fast compact car," says Hans-Juergen Abt. And it's evident the clientele won't go disappointed.

Horsepower raises from a leisurely 250 hp in production form to a rather more Abt 370 hp, the 120 hp hike achieved via a modified motor management system and the introduction of an Abt compressor kit with supercharger and air cooling system. The upgrades power a hike in top speed to over 270 kph (or 168 mph), while acceleration to 100 kph or 62 mph decreases from 6.2 seconds in production form to just 5.0 seconds.

The same dynamic performance is delivered both on the Autobahn and on winding country roads thanks to Abt's sports suspension kit, 'perfectly harmonising' with all 370 horses of the Abt R32's V6 engine.

An extraordinary vehicle is kitted out as such, primarily featuring 19-inch wheels and Abt decals but otherwise including only subtle bodykit modifications. A new side skirt and blackened once chrome dual exhaust pipes are the principle alterations. No details on any interior upgrades or kit release dates have been announced.

Renault Laguna GT: In Detail

Renault proudly presented the GT model of their successful Laguna range at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, time to bring further details of the sporty Laguna.

The new Renault Laguna has already been ordered by more than 50,000 people across Western Europe, allowing Renault to grab a larger market share in spite of the renewed models in the shrinking segment.

The new Renault Laguna GT Saloon and Estate is powered by either a 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 205 hp or a 2.0 liter dCi diesel putting out 180 hp. Top speed is clocked at 232 km/h for the saloon while the estate managed 222 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h should take the saloon about 8 seconds while the estate requires about 8,5 seconds.

But more interesting than the bespoke engines is the Active Drive chassis. This new chassis features a four-wheel-steering system (4WS) to give the driver more manoeuvrability and steering precision. In the city the Active Chassis delivers a shorter turning circle, namely 10.80 meters, the same as the Renault Clio.

The new Renault Laguna GT is scheduled to go on sale in France early next month, with the rest of Europe following this summer.

Four-wheel steering for an exceptional ride

The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering brings many benefits, starting with improved manoeuvrability, extremely rigorous dynamic response, and unequalled steering precision which gives the driver truly intuitive control over the cornering line, to attain new heights in driveability and active safety. The steering is immediately reassuring and agreeable, even at low speeds. In town and on winding roads, the car is easy to drive: manoeuvrable and precise.

Advanced roll control, with specific settings and reinforced seat support, gives the impression that Renault Laguna GT corners flat, without leaning into the bend. The driver is pleasantly surprised by the lack of transient dynamic phenomena when cornering, and by the extreme precision achieved by very small steering wheel angles. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also excels in active safety, both under difficult braking conditions (with good control over asymmetrical grip, and ESP matched to sporty driving styles), and during avoidance manoeuvres at speed ('elk' test).

    Impressive low-speed manoeuvrability

The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering makes Renault Laguna GT exceptionally easy to handle in town and superbly agile on winding roads. At speeds of less than 60kphh, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, up to an angle of 3.5°. This brings two advantages: a smaller turning circle, for easy manoeuvring; and smaller steering wheel angles thanks to the more direct, specially calibrated steering.

With four-wheel steering on the Active Drive chassis, Renault Laguna GT has a 10 per cent smaller turning circle than with two-wheel steering: 10.80 metres (the same as Clio!) with 18- inch tyres, instead of 12.05m. The greater the rear-wheel steering angle, the smaller the turning circle. Enhanced manoeuvrability is especially remarkable in tight parking situations and along narrow city streets.

With front wheels and rear wheels turning in opposite directions, the car effectively pivots, which means smaller steering angles are needed for the same turning effect. Whereas it takes a 16° steering wheel angle to produce a 1° turn in the front wheels on New Laguna, it takes just 13.5° with the Active Drive chassis. And this drops to 12° when the rear wheels are turned at the maximum 3.5° angle in the opposite direction to the front wheels. Because steering is more direct, with less need for wide steering wheel angles, the impression of manoeuvrability and agility is greatly enhanced. For any given bend profile, the driver will need less action on the steering wheel. This makes for more effective avoidance, with the car seeming to weave effortlessly around obstacles.

    Ultra-precise steering control

From 60kph, the emphasis is on steering precision. The rear wheels turn simultaneously in the same direction as the front wheels, to enhance stability, almost as if the car were running on rails. The Active Drive system with four-wheel steering counters the centrifugal force that tends to push the rear end outwards round bends, and thus raises the safe cornering speed. The rear axle is set on the ideal trajectory, with a rear-wheel angle of less than 2° in most situations, for stability and efficacy. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering enhances dynamic handling, with sound, reassuring response for outstanding driving pleasure.

    Unparalleled active safety

The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also improves safety for heightened reassurance during avoidance manoeuvres. In an emergency situation, the rear-wheel angle can rise to 3.5°. Cut-in of the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system, specially configured for a sporty driving style, is delayed, so that the manoeuvre can be performed both safely and more swiftly. ESC only switches in when necessary, and is applied gradually because it is synchronized with the rear-wheel turn action. Via the ESC/ABS unit, the 4WS control unit also detects asymmetrical braking situations, adapting the rear-wheel turn angle automatically to keep the car stable with no driver action required. This helps the driver keep control during critical situations, and ensures uninterrupted peace of mind during everyday driving conditions.

    Dynamic control logic

Developed jointly by Renault and Renault Sport Technologies, the Active Drive chassis with four- wheel steering implements electronic control of vehicle dynamics. A sensor on the steering column sends steering wheel angle information via the CAN network to the 4WD control unit, located behind the rear axle. The 4WD control unit also inputs vehicle speed from the ESP/ABS unit. And it tracks steering wheel angle information to detect sharp steering wheel movements symptomatic of a sports driving style or avoidance situation. All these parameters are analysed to determine the required rear-wheel turn angle, which is implemented by means of an electric actuator on the rear axle. Dynamic vehicle behaviour is precisely modelled to set the ideal vehicle trajectory at each instant, on the basis of the driver’s input and the actual situation of the vehicle. The controller and electric actuator are supplied by Aisin, a Japanese equipment supplier reputed for its experience in four-wheel steering systems.

    High-performance engines

The diesel version of Renault Laguna GT is powered by a 2.0 dCi engine, best-in-class for performance, driveability and acoustics. In this implementation, it yields exceptional peak power of 180hp (131kW) at 3,750rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is available from 2,000rpm, for prompt, consistent, sustained build-up through to 5,000 rpm. A reduced-inertia variable-nozzle turbocharger enhances dynamic response at low revs to achieve superlative performance: 29.6 seconds for the 1,000m standing start, and 0 to 100kph in 8.5 seconds. This new unit is fitted with a particulate filter and EGR valve with enhanced cooling, which makes intense driving pleasure perfectly consistent with environmental protection: mixed-cycle fuel consumption is just 6.5 litres/100km, which translates into CO2 emissions of just 172g/km. With its ultra-fast glow plugs, the 180hp 2.0 dCi unit roars into action instantly when the Start button is pressed, even in conditions of extreme cold (down to -23°C).

The petrol version of Renault Laguna GT is powered by a sports version (205hp/150kW at 5,000rpm and 300Nm from 3,000rpm) of the two-litre 16-valve unit, derived from Renault Sport technology as featured on Mégane Renault Sport, and specifically reworked for Renault Laguna GT, to yield the best in performance, handling and intense driving pleasure. It is superbly versatile, combining velvet smoothness with astonishingly crisp response, ideal for sports usage.

Design features such as the special air-intake system and twin-scroll turbo ensure the rev- counter leaps forward at the slightest touch of the throttle। Renault Laguna GT 2.0T accelerates from 0 to 100kph in 7.8 seconds and takes 28s to cover 1,000 metres from standstill. Yet fuel consumption is a very reasonable 8.2 litres/100km, which makes for CO2 emissions of just 194g/km.

    Distinctive GT styling

With its distinctive streamlined profile, Renault Laguna GT expresses an elegance that goes much further than sporting aptitude alone. The long plunging bonnet terminates in a highly assertive front-end with a radiator grille characteristic of the most powerful Renaults. Purposeful- looking lateral air-intakes suggest an insatiable appetite for the open road, corroborated by the wise gaze of the headlamps against the neat black background. Renault Laguna GT is fitted with generously sized 225/45 18-inch special high performance Bridgestone Potenza tyres, a Formula One spin-off, mounted on special Celsium wheels. The highly efficacious braking system uses 320mm diameter discs at the front and 300mm discs at the rear. Aerodynamic sills reflect the promise of the Active Drive chassis extend from the front of the car to the characteristic straight-section twin tailpipe at the rear. Sports tourer attributes run through to every last detail, such as the gloss black wing mirrors and smoked rear lamp units.

    Sports interior

As well as appearing on the outside centre pillar, the exclusive GT logo is also embossed on the light grey alcantara of the front seatbacks. As on all Renault Laguna models, the interior design exudes a most impressive sense of comfort and quality, in all seats. Sports design details abound, highlighting the exclusive capacities of the GT version: special three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with grey stitching, cross-drilled aluminium pedal, sports gearshift lever knob, dark charcoal Riviera leather upholstery with reinforced lateral support. Extreme attention has been paid to materials and finish, true to the car’s unwavering commitment to pure motoring pleasure.

    Equipments and technology

The Renault Laguna GT range starts with the Dynamique equipment level and features a long list of top-end equipment selected to favour travelling comfort, including a three-mode (Soft/Auto/Fast) dual-zone automatic climate control system complete with toxicity sensor and automatic air recycling. Driving comfort is enhanced by the availability of parking brake assist, cruise control with speed limiter and automatic headlamp and wiper activation, while acoustic comfort was dialled into the model from a very early phase in its development thanks to features that have made Renault Laguna a benchmark in this area, too. Nothing has been left to chance on the active and passive safety fronts either. Renault Laguna and the GT version particularly excel in terms of their active safety performance as demonstrated by the latest EuroNCAP test results. Its principal innovation concerns improved side impact protection thanks to a twin impact sensor system and new-generation double thorax/groin airbags.

The affordable overall equipment and performance package of this flagship version sets it apart on the sports saloon marketplace and ensures the ultimate in reassuring driving pleasure.

Advanced technology for an unforgettable ride

Four-wheel steering systems of the 1980s were essentially mechanical, with the front and rear wheels linked and pre-determined angles aimed at making up for shortcomings in the vehicle's handling (e.g. a tendency to understeer). Such systems were gradually superseded by the advent of ESP. Meanwhile, towards the end of the 1990s, carmakers like Nissan were beginning to develop solutions based on electrically- and even hydraulically-operated activators with a view to taking the dynamic performance of their vehicles forward. Electronic control of the rear wheels has enabled handling to be fine-tuned even further, notably in the case of rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The Active Drive system builds on this approach by ensuring a more dynamic and more reactive response to make the absolute most of the inherent qualities of Renault Laguna GT's remarkable chassis and consequently deliver even greater driving enjoyment. In addition to the complex modelling of the vehicle's handling, real-time response to the driver's instructions (every 10ms) and its ability to adapt to different conditions, New Laguna GT's Active Drive four-wheel steering system means that active safety systems are only required as a very last resort, which means drivers benefit from more efficient and even more reassuring reactions when faced with an unexpected driving situation.

Mercedes E-Class Latest Renderings

Brand spanking new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is due to go on sale in mid-2010, but as per normal the frenzy of spy pics has been feeding upon itself for months yet. Of course WCF has been at thecutting edge of this frenzy, and with that same spirit we bring you these renderings of what the E-Class will probably look like when it hits the market.

Merc has demonstrated with their current crop of cars that they are ready for a design change. Sharper lines, more kink around the edges have signaled a harder approach to Merc, a sign that the world’s oldest luxury car maker is going aggressively at the younger market. Even their ad campaigns are a showcase of youth. Why C-Class is now sold as “your car, not your dad’s” for example.

E-Class is expected to debut a few new technologies for its segment, while existing ones including Bluetech and Diesotto, are to make an even bigger presence. Engines worn on the two body styles saloon and estate as proper, will be petrol-based, diesel-bound, hybrid-origin and a surprise fuel mix. The AMG performance version of the E-Class will for the first time, surpass 400kW/ 536 bhp.

New Suzuki DZire for India

    Swift sedan

Suzuki is planning on displaying some power in North America with a new sports sedan, in India they take a somewhat less extreme route. Tomorrow Maruti Suzuki will launch the Suzuki Swift DZire, a sedan version of the hatchback.

Officially Suzuki has released some teaser images, but IBNLive has taken the new car for a test drive already and published the video on their website. The front of the car stays mostly the same (new grille) but the rear has been radically redesigned resulting in double the trunk space.

Suzuki is looking to compete in the entry-level mid-size segment with the Renault Logan and Tata Indigo. The new Swift DZire is expected to cost about Rs 75,000 (Euro 1,200) more than the Swift hatchback.

Whether this Swift sedan will ever make it out of India is doubtful now that Suzuki has already debuted the SX4 sedan in North America and Europe.

Ferrari Dino Spied

This footage is showing a mule of the new car. Based on a 599 body it doesn’t yet give away so much but at least a little of what will become the new Dino. What identifies the test car as a mule for the Dino is the engine sound, or should we say the lack of it. It clearly doesn’t sound as sharp as a F430 for example.

The Classic Dino was built between 1968 and 1976, and its name honours the founder Enzo Ferrari´s son, Alfredino “Dino“ Ferrari, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 from a muscular dystrophy. While that vintage Dino had a V6 behind the driver, the new one will be powered by a V8 with 400 bhp. Ferrari will most likely start with a Coupe, but expect a Spider later on. There is a high possibility that Pininfarina will do the design work with input from former Ferrari design boss Frank Stephenson, who now heads Fiat´s Centro Stile operation.

The Dino will be starting at approximately 100-110.000 Euros. Insiders are saying that it’s possible to sell up to 4000 Dinos annually once the car gets the green light for production. Such a figure would instantly double Ferrari´s yearly production and give the make a whole new group of customers.

Talk is also about the new Dino to be built at the Maserati factory in the city of Modena. This city is very important to the history of Ferrari, as it is the town where its founder Enzo Ferrari was born. Even if Ferrari is still denying the project, we expect to see it on the roads in 2009.

Ford set to announce sale of Jaguar, Land Rover to Tata

    TATA FORD JAGUAR

Could the protracted sale of Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford to Tata finally be coming to an end? After learning last week that Tata has secured the financing required to make the deal possible, reports are coming from London's Financial Times suggesting that the official announcement of the sale, reportedly worth $2 billion, could come as soon as on Wednesday, when Jaguar workers return to work after enjoying their Easter holiday. This sale, of course, follows up Ford's sale of Aston Martin, leaving a lonely Volvo as the only company left of Ford's Premium Automotive Group.

Details of the deal include Tata's assurance that they will continue to buy engines from Ford for Jaguar and Land Rover and Ford's continuing to contribute to the pension fund of both marques.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/

Audi Q7 hybrid won't be making it to the U.S

    Audi Q7

While premium hybrid SUVs haven't proven their worth in the U.S. market yet, automakers will have a good fix on whether or not offering a gasoline-electric hybrid 'ute is good business sense in the coming years. Audi has apparently already made the call, and after studying the business case and watching the U.S. dollar tank, it's decided that the Q7 hybrid SUV is not bound for U.S. shores.

"It was a very hard car to make the numbers work," according to Johan de Nysschen, Audi's brand head in the U.S. "We will not do the hybrid Q7 as a conventional product offering," de Nysschen continued, saying only that a few hybrid Q7s will make the trek across the pond and find their way into the hands of "commercial" entities.

However, all is not lost for a fuel-sipping version of Audi's land yacht, with the eminent arrival of the diesel Q7 in the next year or so, the SUV will spearhead Audi's diesel offerings, followed by an oil-burning A4 around the turn of the decade.Source URL: http://automotivetrendnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/
